I have been helping students of all abilities learn how to succeed since 1985. My experience teaching and developing college writing and literature courses, tutoring in a university writing center, helping found another and serving for over a decade as director of an after-school non-profit learning lab providing academic support in all subjects for high school students has enabled me to develop a variety of programs, strategies, courses and workshops designed to help students from all walks of life succeed. With special expertise in writing, literature, language and the humanities, I understand that the best learning results from patient coaching and clear instruction rather than judgmental criticism.

As an academic coach, my goal is to develop independent learners. I help students understand how to approach projects and assignments so that their success with one challenge can lead to success with new tasks. My students learn to understand clearly what assignments are asking them to do and to organize their notes, classroom materials and study strategies to anticipate exactly what will be on the test. I love to see my students develop confidence and build a set of tools they can use in school, on the job and in life.

As a college professor I have taught students of all abilities, from struggling basic writers and English as a second language students to advanced literature scholars. Having studied Latin, Germanic, Romance and Celtic languages and literatures, I understand how to use language to create great writing. As a long-time writing teacher, my superpowers are organizing, revising, editing and proofreading--all practical skills any student can learn to do well. Because I have written tests and other academic assessments, I understand from the inside how to best anticipate and to prepare for them.

I began my career teaching developmental and college writing courses at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and have taught academic essay writing in composition, rhetoric and literature courses for decades. As a writing coach, I apply my understanding of the writing challenge from both the instructor's and the student's point of view to help students develop a systematic, process-driven approach to crafting their essays. Whether working to explain how that poem works or developing research results for publication, my high school, college and graduate school students regularly report success and satisfaction with the product of their efforts.

Latin

I studied classical and medieval Latin as a graduate student. While earning my MA and PhD in Medieval Studies, I read and translated primary classical, religious, scientific, literary and historical Latin texts, giving me a wide-ranging expertise in the Latin language from the classical period, through the middle ages and into the Renaissance. My thesis and dissertation examine how Irish scholars used classical and medieval Latin sources to teach the work of Bede, an eighth-century church father. Working as director of an after-school learning lab for high school students has given me considerable experience tutoring Latin one-on-one.

I am a writer and editor with a PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have over a decade's experience designing and teaching college writing and literature courses at UNC and at Marist College, and I have provided individual tutoring services at both institutions, having worked in one college's Writing Center and helped found another's. In addition, I served as long-term Executive Director of a non-profit, after-school, academic-support facility for Wake County high-school students, where I designed and delivered tutoring programs and services in all subjects. As a writing coach, I know that willing students can develop into stronger writers through extensive practice and patient, positive feedback.

Wonderful tutor, great to work with

We highly recommend Steven for tutoring in English: writing, editing reading comprehension, literature. He is superb! Steven has worked with our high school son and on occasion our college daughter. He has helped with all kinds of writing for different classes, English, vocabulary, grammar, SAT, ACT, college admission essays, presentations, editing, resumes, building self confidence and more.
