Bio

I am a certified teacher in several different areas: elementary education, special education, middle school and high school English, and middle school and high school social studies. I would also be comfortable in tutoring people for the reading portion of the ACTs and selected Praxis tests. I have extensive experience with ESL students. I am a certified teacher in several different areas: elementary education, special education, middle school and high school English, and middle school and high school social studies. I would also be comfortable in tutoring people for the reading portion of the ACTs and selected Praxis tests. I have extensive experience with ESL students. I was teaching in the public school system for ten years, mostly in middle school and elementary school.

As a teacher, I believe very strongly that one of the most important foundations for success is building up the students' confidence in their abilities. To that end, I prefer to have preliminary information about present levels of functioning (both strengths and weaknesses), as well as general likes and dislikes. I am equally comfortable with helping students with their school assignments or with creating units based on preferences. As a former special education teacher, I am used to working one on one with students, assessing their individual needs and working as a team in order to help the student be successful.

I would prefer to meet at public libraries, at least for the initial meeting. Since I am no longer teaching, I have a lot of flexibility in scheduling.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

Since I have taught as both a general education teacher and a special education teacher, I have had much experience with teaching students with ADD or ADHD. I have written many individualized education plans and have set up and ensured the use of accommodations in the classroom. I have a thorough understanding of the (sometimes confusing!) procedural world of special education.
Common Core

Common Core

As a former teacher who has taught the Common Core and as a facilitator who worked in a national company committed to helping parents understand how to help their children with homework (K-12), I have a firm grounding in the Common Core. I have many resources from which to pull. I enjoy helping students and I have a long history of working to help struggling students.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6 elementary teacher. I have taught 2nd grade, 6th grade math, and elementary special education (all grades). I have subbed extensively in each grade as well.
Handwriting

Handwriting

As a special education teacher, I have worked closely with my school's occupational therapist on the intricacies of correct grip and pressure as well as some exercises for handwriting. As a former general education teacher, I have also taught handwriting as a subject with mini lessons and practice time.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I studied Hebrew in college for a year and a half. I still have my textbooks and materials with me. I feel able to teach elementary, basic "survival" Hebrew to those who are just starting to learn the language. I have a background in studying languages, and have a BA in Russian, so I am familiar with how to study a foreign language.
Phonics

Phonics

I am a certified elementary and special education teacher. The last year I taught in public school, Wake County had just approved the Letter land program for kindergarten and first grade. I worked with many students on implementing many supporting activities with Letter land. I also have other materials that I used for phonics studies including games and exercises to practice phonics skills.
Political Science

Political Science

In addition to being a certified history teacher in both middle school and high school, I took many courses on political science in college, particularly in international politics. I am an avid reader of biographies on political figures and I have lived abroad in Russia for a time.
Praxis

Praxis

As a certified teacher, I have taken many Praxis exams. I received three separate Recognition of Excellence awards, which are given if you score in the top 15th percent of all test takers. The areas were in Elementary Education Content Knowledge (which is not something North Carolina teachers take), high school social studies, and high school English. I received a perfect score (200/200) on the high school English test, putting me in the top 2% of all test takers. I feel comfortable tutoring future teachers in their preliminary tests, and any social studies or English tests.
Russian

Russian

My BA is in Russian language and literature. I studied it for four years, taking many advanced courses. I spent a summer in Moscow attending Moscow State University. I have a passion for it and have always wanted a job teaching Russian language.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I am a certified social studies teacher for middle school and high school. I scored in the top 15th percentile on the high school social studies content test, earning me an Recognition of Excellence award. I have previously taught 8th graders who were reading at around a 3rd grade reading level American history. I enjoy using other media to help them with concepts. For instance, there were many good YouTube videos that often helped with comprehending the material and there are books that teach history for students who struggle with reading that are not too "babyish."
Special Needs

Special Needs

I am a former certified special education teacher. I have worked with many different students in their general education classrooms or in pull out situations. I have worked in both elementary school and middle school as a special education teacher. Most special needs children require a more individualized instructional model that recognizes their learning styles and uses them to optimize learning. I'm aware of the current models and have developed strategies of my own with experiences I've encountered as a teacher.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have explicitly taught study skills as a middle school special education teacher. With the focus on high stakes testing, I believe that the area of study skills has recently experienced a revival among teachers. I have taught specific skills geared towards specific areas: calming techniques for the anxious student, organizational techniques for the disorganized student. I have also taught procedural skills related to how one should study.

Very knowledgeable, patient, and helpful!

I needed help taking my Praxis 5003 exam. I took the test before finding Michelle and scored 144. I often felt like I wouldn't be able to pass the test, but Michelle made the tutoring process comfortable and easy for me. Each day was focused around a different domain I would need to pass my test. Michelle knew what material would be on the test and incorporated things I asked for more clarification on as well. After tutoring with Michelle for a little over a month, I retook the test and scored 169! I couldn't have asked for a better tutor.

Michelle is Wonderful!

Michelle is a wonderful tutor. She's incredibly effective working with my high school son who has ADHD. She helps him look ahead to upcoming assignments and prioritize his work. His grades have gone up in every single class!

Excellent teacher!

My son enjoyed the session and came out inspired. What I liked was the initial assessment Michelle did to gauge how to cater the instruction to fit my son’s needs. She asked me a lot of questions about my son’s writing skills and gave me a comprehensive feedback on her observations after the class.

Knowledgeable and patient

Michelle taught multiple terms and comprehension tips to prepare for 5th-grade reading. The terms helped her work on her 5th-grade summer package, we look forward to working with her during the school year.

Knowledge

Michelle came when the pandemic was affecting my daughter's learning availability. Michelle has been the best addition to my learning support. My daughter’s literacy score has gone up now to 10 points. Do not hesitate. She’s a remarkable tutor.

Great Teacher

Michelle started teaching my daughter since last summer when she was at Kindergarten. Her school has placements based on individual’s progress. Before studying with Michelle, she was at level 1 which corresponded to Grade1. Michelle evaluated my daughter’s level and provided customized study schedule based on her pace. Now, my daughter is placed at level3 (grade 3). We highly recommend Michelle.
