I have experience in mentoring and tutoring of young people aged 5 to 17. I have been tutoring in some form or fashion for the past 25 years. I guess I got my start in tutoring youth from my church when I was a recent college graduate in the early 90's. Over the years I have become close to a few of the families at my church and have been involved in tutoring various subjects, but mostly math, to the children of these families.

One of my tutees that I started tutoring when she was in middle school, has gone on to earn several academic honors in her high school career and is now a student at the naval academy in Annapolis MD. Several other young people I have tutored on a personal level have gone on to maintain honor roll and principal list standing at their prospective schools.

I have also had success in tutoring students in reading through a YMCA program called Community Hope. This is a literacy program that identifies reading deficiencies and puts together a targeted program for the student to get them to the appropriate reading level.

I am passionate about helping students to grasp mathematical concepts and understand what they read. I like to use more of a coaching approach in tutoring my students. I think that a student is better equipped to grasp a concept or principle when they are encouraged to apply it themselves instead of just being explained to and shown how to do it.

I enjoy challenging my students to stretch their creative thinking abilities and push beyond their comfort zones. A major goal of mine is to bolster student confidence in their academic prowess which should lead to more successful test performance.

I graduated from a college preparatory curriculum in high school and finished Cum Laude from the Physics and Engineering school at Hampton University. Calculus was the highest level of classical mathematics that I have completed.
