Now Accepting New Students!

I am a former English teacher who transitioned back to communications - though I dearly miss my students and look forward to tutoring again! I have taught nearly every high school English and writing class, including: World Literature & American Literature (both regular and honors), AP Language & Composition, Dual Enrollment ENG 101 & 102, Creative Writing, Reading, and Journalism.

The biggest benefit to tutoring is the 1:1 lesson and connection. This level of interaction is just not available in the modern-day classroom - or anything close to it! Unless students feel comfortable asking questions or approaching their teachers after class, they often remain confused and even insecure about their performance.

Private tutoring is an absolute game-changer. In addition to one-on-one attention, there's no need for me to rush through lesson plans. We work on concepts until students "get it." Even then, we practice, practice, and practice some more. My goal is for students to walk into the testing room or turn in a paper and say, "I feel good about this."

TEST PREP: One of the biggest factors with the SAT, ACT and AP exams is test STRATEGY. In addition to building students' vocabulary, reading comprehension levels, and grammar skills, we work on skipping and guessing strategies, text-marking strategies, and timing elements. I can also assist with college essays. I can't write them for students; however, I can help with brainstorming, outlining, editing, and revision.

English test prep really goes beyond the tests themselves; most of my "tutees" have told me that our tutoring sessions have made a huge difference in their classroom performance. I've also had many students tell me that tutoring with me helped them gain valuable skills for college that they would have been lost without. I look forward to working with you!

ACT English

ACT English

The English portion of the ACT assesses students' knowledge of grammar and writing; ACT wants to make sure that you know the difference between a colon and semicolon, when to use a comma with a conjunction, whether you know the difference between possessives and contractions, etc. Don't be intimidated by all of the grammar jargon - it's more important that you know the actual rule versus the name of the rule. After tutoring with me, you will not only whiz through this section of the ACT, but you'll make better grammatical choices in your own writing!
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

The Reading section of the ACT consists of four passages: a literary passage, a social science passage, a humanities passage, and a science passage. Each passage consists of ten questions, for a total of 40 questions. Because students only have 35 minutes to complete this section, they often feel very pressured. No worries! Even if you hate reading, I have many strategies to help you achieve the score you're looking for.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

There are three SAT reading sections on the SAT test - two are 24 questions and one is 19 questions. You will begin each section with vocabulary questions, followed by reading passages of varying lengths. While the SAT is not for the faint of heart, there are many strategies I can teach you to help you achieve the score you're looking for. And don't forget that skipping questions can be advantageous; the key is just not to skip too many. Together, we can figure out a healthy number for you to skip comfortably, depending on your scoring goals. Update: The format of the SAT is changing in Spring of 2016! Please ask me for details :)
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

The SAT writing sections assess students on their grammatical knowledge: can you recognize a misplaced modifier? Does the verb tense match the subject? What about indefinite pronouns - do you know that they take a singular verb and pronoun antecedent? While this may sound like a lot of overwhelming grammar jargon, more and more colleges are using your writing score (in addition to your math and reading scores) to decide whether you are ready for college. No worries - I can teach you easy grammar rules to help you score successfully in these sections. Don't be surprised if your classroom writing improves as well! Update: The grammar section of the SAT with count in conjunction with the reading portion, thanks to changes occurring in 2016. Ask me for details :)

Erin Gets Results!

My son took the ACT as a Sophomore so he could have experience taking the ACT and so we could get a baseline to see where he was at. He got a composite of 25 with a English score of 23 and Reading score of 2, his lowest 2 of the 4 categories. We contacted Erin for tutoring to help bring the English ( and Reading and Writing) scores up so that his Composite would be more level. He just took the ACT as a Junior 2 weeks ago and his Composite is now a 32 ! And the English jumped up to a 35 and reading up to a 30 ! ( we are still waiting for the Writing score, but anticipate a good score based on what we see). Every week my son said he learned new things from Erin. He said he learned basics that he didn't recall learning in school ( how sad is that?) and tricks and tips to help in how he would approach the test questions. He did the lessons, practice passages and test she assigned, and then together, they went over them and made corrections. By the end of the 7 weeks, he was scoring high on the practice tests. After the ACT, he said he felt very confident that he scored well.....and he was right! My son said Erin is kind, easy to work with, clear and concise. We definitely would recommend Erin to prospective students looking for help in English and Reading ! Erin was easy to contact and flexible with scheduling. Thanks Erin !

Highly Recommended for ACT English help!

8/8/14 We were very apprehensive about using an online service, but my daughter's first lesson with Erin went very well. Erin was prepared with ACT English & Reading lessons. They used the lesson time very effectively! Great start! 9/8/14 My daughter is very optimistic that Erin's tutoring on the ACT English and Reading are going to help her achieve the goal she has set for the upcoming test. Anyone that can keep my independent student interested in "getting help" deserves a 5 star in my book. Thanks Erin! 9/19/14 We really appreciate how organized and adapt you have been, Erin, knowing exactly what my daughter needed to greatly improve her grammar skills. She now feels completely confident in achieving her goal with all the strategies you have taught her. Thanks so much! 11/11/14 - One last update! Erin taught my daughter a lot of strategies in the 10 or so hours they worked together. Kaitlin was able to raise her English score by 11 points, which is incredible, and she was able to achieve the composite score she had as a goal for herself. Eleven points!!! That's incredible! All the time the spent together was spent efficiently and well worth every penny. Thanks, Erin!

Great Tutor

My son loves Erin’s private lessons for improving his reading comprehension in ACT. After only 2 lessons, his ACT practice test in Reading reached a score of 32. Also, he was able to get 100% in his ELA final exam. Erin taught good strategies and helped my son to build up his confidence. We highly recommend Erin to anyone.

Great tutor!

My son felt very comfortable with Erin. She was very patient and provided materials for additional practice. My son's reading score went from a 16 to a 21 within one testing period (April to June). I would highly recommend Erin as a tutor.

Tutor responded:

I was so pleased to hear back about his score increase, especially only after meeting a handful of times. It just goes to show that these strategies WORK. Good luck to you guys and enjoy the rest of your summer.

Thank you, Erin!

Erin's been great! My daughter improved 3 points in English and 3 points in Reading. My son improved 5 in English and 3 points in Reading. Erin kept them on point and kept me informed of their progress. She is conscientious and flexible. The kids like and respect her. She's a great find I would recommend to anyone!
