About James

Bio

I can teach General Relativity to an English major, and I can help physics students write essays for law school (I’ve done both). I specialize in taking hard concepts and making them relatable to anyone. Every person has a unique way of peering into the world and seeing wonder. Whatever subject you're studying, I discover how you learn, and then I translate that subject in words and language that makes sense to you. Together we build confidence one problem and one sentence at a time.

I have been working with students as a teacher and tutor for nearly 12 years. I began by teaching high school physics and math at a classical school in Washington, D.C. Later when I returned to grad school and moved to Los Angeles, I switched to tutoring evenings and nights so I could learn during the day.

You can see many of the topics I teach below, but I specialize in working with students in math, science, humanities, and SAT/ACT test prep. If you need help with any middle and high school (except foreign language) subjects or with college intro classes in math, physics, chemistry, or statistics, I can help things make a bit more sense. I have worked with students from public and private high schools, community colleges like Pasadena City College and Wake Tech, or at universities such as USC, UCLA, UNC, Duke, and NC State. My high school students have gone on to Stanford, Berkeley, Michigan, Washington, Boston College, Virginia, UNC, Duke, Princeton, Cal-Poly, Clemson, Davidson, Loyola, Georgetown, George Washington, UNCW, and many more schools in the US and around the world.

I moved back to the Raleigh area after 7 years in California. Instead of flying, I took a two-week road trip across the country, traveling through Nevada, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. I am also a photographer, and seeing these great American landscapes was a dream come true.

Please send me a message and we can chat over the phone about how I can help you reach your goals!

ACT English

ACT English

I've studied multiple languages, linguistics, and I have a Master's degree in Theology. But I am equally gifted in math and science, and I bring a rigorous statistical approach to studying for the verbal sections on the ACT and SAT. My students learn the skills that lead to quick improvement in test scores and confidence in reading and writing.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I've been an ACT Math tutor for over ten years. When I work with a student, I do a comprehensive assessment of a students abilities and then design a program customized to their individual needs. Over time, your student will gain confidence in their own abilities and be ready for whatever the test can throw at them. Let's work together to build a better future!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have over ten years of experience teaching algebra 1 in the classroom and one-on-one. Algebra 1 was hard for me when I was first learning in middle school, so I know what it's like to see a variable and freeze. Over the years I've worked hard to take the abstract in algebra and make it concrete. Let's work together!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have over ten years of experience teaching algebra 2 in the classroom and one-on-one. Algebra 2 was hard for me when I was first learning in middle school, so I know what it's like to see a variable and freeze. Over the years I've worked hard to take the abstract in algebra and make it concrete. Let's work together!
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I completed an M. Div from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2015, being ordained as a deacon in the PCUSA, have founded a non-profit that consults with churches on practical ministry, and have worked in churches in volunteer and professional capacities for 20 years.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus can seem so intimidating, many students avoid the subject, never even trying to take their first derivative. But fear not! Calculus is actually one of the most interesting maths you can study. I specialize in making calculus what it should be: a fun and fascinating topic that can open up the world around you. Let's work together and you'll not only get better grades, you may find yourself seeing math as fun for the first time!
Chemistry

Chemistry

I've tutored Chemistry students of all abilities for over ten years! The key in chemistry is pairing two skills: memorization and basic algebra. It looks scary because of all the weird symbols and new terms, but if you learn the language of chemistry, most of the problems are fairly simple. I work hard to help you bring together the concepts, the language, and the math to ensure your success!
Physics

Physics

Physics is the language of the universe! But that language can often seem weird, out of place with what we experience in everyday life. I have been spent years as a physics teacher and tutor translating the language of physics into something anyone can understand. Let's work together, and make physics what it was meant to be: a window into the amazing wonder all around us!
Precalculus

Precalculus

I love Math! It’s the language of the universe, and math proficiency develops cognitive skills that can be used in fields that never touch an algebra equation. Unfortunately, many math devotees tend to be less proficient at social relationships and human communication. But even though I love and excel at math, my true gifts are as a communicator and a teacher. I can work with you to find those missing pieces in your math history that are holding you back in class. Send me a message and let's get started making that math class a little bit easier, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit more fun.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I’ve been tutoring students from all over the United States in SAT/ACT prep for over ten years. I was trained by an award-winning tutoring and test prep company in suburban Los Angeles. Students often spend thousands of dollars on tutoring mills that blast information indiscriminately to large classes of desperate high schoolers. I have developed a more targeted approach that identifies the key areas students need to see a rapid increase in their scores. I have had students go from a 29 to a36 on the ACT, from a 1150 to a 1520 on the SAT, and my students have gone on to schools like Cal-Berkeley, Stanford, Virginia, UNC, Duke, Michigan, and many many more. Let’s work together to see your student admission letters go from a dream to reality!
Statistics

Statistics

I’ve been tutoring students in Statistics for over 13 years, and I have help hundreds of students in high school, college and grad level stats! Let’s work together to break down problems and equations together, making sense of complex terms so that next exam is a breeze!

Good teacher. Excellent explanations!

James did very well with our son in their first session together. James explained things simplistically and provided tips and guidance that helped our son better approach his physics problems. Our son was pleased with James over other tutors we’ve had. James didn’t solve the problems but challenged our son to mentally work through them. We will continue to work with James beyond the winter exams. We believe with his help our son will improve his foundation in physics and improve his overall grades on tests and quizzes.

Great teacher

James was a huge help with our son. He was able to relate his stats problems in a way that made sense. Our son would not have passed stats without James’s help.
