I’m a Ph.D. statistician who genuinely enjoys helping students understand mathematics rather than simply memorize procedures. I earned my Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and my master’s degree from IIT Kanpur. During graduate school, I taught undergraduate mathematics and statistics for seven semesters. I have also spent many years teaching my own two children and helping students from 6th grade through high school, so I’m comfortable working with students at very different levels of mathematical maturity and confidence.

My teaching philosophy is “intuition first, formalism second.” I like to begin with the underlying idea, use examples and visual reasoning to make it concrete, and then introduce the formulas and techniques. I ask students questions throughout the lesson, work through problems step by step, and gradually shift more of the problem solving to the student. My goal is for students to leave a session understanding why something works and feeling confident enough to tackle similar problems on their own.

I also bring nearly 30 years of professional experience applying mathematics and statistics to real-world quantitative problems. My passion for the subject led me to write The Compendium of Statistical Tests, a 772-page reference covering 255 statistical tests. I tutor mathematics and statistics from middle and high school through college and graduate-level topics, and I’m happy to adapt each lesson to the student’s course, learning style, and goals.

Very effective tutor

Maruthy tutored my son on IB physics, and he was the third tutor we had tried. Immediately following their session, my son came to me and said his tutor was so helpful and that he finally understood the material. He had his test today, and mentioned that he remembered specific things Maruthy had taught him, and he performed quite well. We highly recommend Maruthy and will be using him again!

Fantastic Tutor

Maruthy helped me do a deep dive into concepts I had previously only glanced over. Going through the actual math behind the material is finally making things sink in. One thing I really liked is how he bridged the gap between deep theory and easy-to-understand language and examples. As helpful as professor lectures and hours of watching YouTube videos are, they just don't substitute for a tutor like Maruthy, at least for the way I learn.

Extremely knowledgeable and helpful tutor!

Maruthy is a gem of a tutor! Not only does he know and understand the material I'm working on (a bit of a niche in math), but his passion for the subject and care to help students meet their learning goals is evident from our first session together. I'm excited for a long learning journey with Maruthy as I continue my math fundamentals course and move into multivariate calculus next semester and likely beyond once I'm in grad school. Thank you!

Patient with great subject knowledge

He is very patient. I like the way he explains things. Following the lesson, I spend additional time reviewing the work again using the explanations he gives. Sometime I am overwhelmed by learning so much in one setting. But when I refresh my mind and use the handout he sends, I graps the information with a better understanding. Continued focused and study on the work helps me to better master the information.
