Hi, I’m Alyssa! I’m a magna cum laude graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Archaeology and minors in French and Data Science. I am currently a graduate student working towards an MA. As a student, I’ve learned how important it is to have a teacher who is passionate and willing to help. Sometimes a teacher has a hard time finding the right way to explain a concept to a class with varied strengths and weaknesses; I look forward to being able to help individual students learn in a way that makes sense to them. I specialize in explaining why something works and finding patterns, not just memorization. Learning can be fun when done creatively and with passion! I use lesson plans that worked for me as well as exercises which help students practice and apply what they have learned. Feeling confident in one’s own abilities is one of the best feelings and I hope to make sure every student gains that through hard work and motivation!

I have experience with tutoring ancient languages for college students and teaching preschool (which has taught me patience and individualizing approaches to students’ needs). I’ve peer-tutored students in my language courses in high school and college to prepare for exams and to simply understand the concepts that might not come across well in a textbook page.

I am easily accessible, quick to respond, and eager to help. I always learn something from working with other students (peers or mentees) and I look forward to working with every student. I welcome suggestions from students, teachers, or supporting family about methods or resources. I’m open to frequent, scheduled tutoring (for long-term improvement) or anything as simple as a one-time session as exam prep (where foundational explanations can be lasting and crucial). Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

Archaeology

Archaeology

I have a degree in Classical Archaeology where I took courses on archaeology, anthropology, and studying material culture. I have done three archaeological field seasons, two excavations in Italy and one in Portugal. I have taken coursework on the ethics and legalities of archaeology and completed an internship with the Office of State Archaeology Research Center, where I studied prehistoric and historic artifacts.
Classics

Classics

My degree is in Classics with an emphasis on Classical Archaeology. I have studied Latin and Ancient Greek and can read at an intermediate/advanced level (specific experience with Roman poetry, history, and comedy, Greek tragedy and history). I have also read many classical literature works in translation including the Iliad, the Odyssey, Plato and Aristotle, Dante, and Paradise Lost. I have a complex understanding of classical society, trade, military history, art, and archaeology and can use these fields to contextualize literature and philosophy, understanding the broader picture of the societies which were foundational to much of Western culture.
GIS

GIS

I have specialized experience with GIS as a Cartographic Research Assistant at a university-affiliated mapping center. I am proficient in using QGIS and have hands-on experience with ArcGIS. I have studied GIS and map-making in my undergraduate as a Data Science Minor.
