Hello! My name is Excel and I’m hoping to be your Bioinformatics tutor. After getting my undergraduate from the University of California, Davis, where I tutored organic chemistry, I spent several years working for the Department of Nutrition and the FDA as a bioinformatician, creating tools and pipelines for a mouse genetics research, instructing PhD students and faculty in the use of high performance computing and statistical programming with R. I now work as a senior bioinformaticist for a global pharmaceutical company in their research and development branch, developing software and algorithms that help us understand viral and cancer genetics.

Teaching has always been my favorite part of my role in any of my jobs and I personally feel like bioinformatics is an in-demand field with too few ways to enter it. I hope to help students who want to become the next generation in bioinformatics.

I also have 3+ years as a professional Python developer who can teach the basics of object oriented programming and how Python is best used in bioinformatics.

Using the command line and understanding the infrastructure of the Linux terminal is a daunting task starting from zero. I’m a daily user that speaks it fluently (or at least knows exactly what to google) and can speak to topics that are immediately useful and important as a bioinformatician or just someone looking to break away from point-and-click computing.

I am also an expert in pipeline and analysis environment building - I.e. installing and configuring your command line workspace to maximize your effectiveness in building pipelines or analyzing data. Students who are at this stage of learning will benefit from my expertise is nextflow, conda, docker, SLURM, Azure DevOps, ssh, bash, and vim configuration, as well as a wide variety of common and powerful bioinformatics software.

If you or someone you know is interested in entering the field of bioinformatics, I want to hear from you!

Biostatistics

Biostatistics

As a Senior Bioinformaticist, working with biological data to generate statistical analyses is a core part of my job. I am well versed in all applications of the R statistical programming language, which extends past the running of statistical analyses and into creating workflows that can parse, extract, and organize data, as well as create publication ready tables and visualizations. My statistical experience covers the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics and extends into linear and machine learning modelling.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

Need to master programming skills that translate directly into high-value industry roles? I am a Senior Bioinformatics Engineer at the world's largest contract research organization, where my work relies on building robust, scalable software and novel algorithms to validate medicines and assays on a global scale. This isn't just theory—it's real-world, mission-critical programming applied to high-performance computing. My qualifications to teach you programming are hands-on: • Linux Ecosystem Mastery: I utilize and administrate high-performance compute clusters running exclusively on Linux. You'll learn the essential skills needed to deploy and manage code in professional, enterprise environments. • System Administration & DevOps: I go beyond writing scripts; I administrate virtual machines and engineer custom Linux images for containerization. I can teach you how to build programs that are efficient, secure, and ready for deployment. • Scalable Software Architecture: Learn how to write code that isn't just functional, but scalable—the kind of code required for massive data pipelines in the pharmaceutical industry. If you want to move past basic syntax and learn how to program like a professional engineer, ready to tackle big data and high-performance problems, I can guide you there.
R

R

I have been using R to create software that has been used in the pharmaceutical industry’s production environment and to generate data for academic papers in the fields of bioinformatics and genetics. I have been using the language as both a statistical tool, a plotting tool, and a programming language for over 10 years and have taught R to professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students in an accessible and engaging way that also orients students within command line and software development ecosystems.
