Bio

I have tutored in various math subjects for 20 years now. I believe that anyone can learn this stuff; they just need to be taught correctly. I am also a former graduate teacher assistant for several undergraduate courses, where I led problem-solving sessions and interacted one-on-one with students of various learning styles. I specialize in "breaking down" concepts to make problem solving as simple and straight-to-the-point as possible. One of the main things that students notice about me is...

One of the main things that students notice about me is my passion for math. I always tell my students that it's OK if they don't like math, because I like it enough for the both of us! My job is to help all my students succeed, no matter what!

I have studied and practiced mathematics for my entire life. I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and a master's degree in Applied Mathematics. Therefore, I have a very deep understanding of the subject matter, and can explain concepts in as many ways as necessary to help new students understand better. I can help with the use of different technologies, including TI-83, TI-84, Excel, and R, just to name a few.

GRE,

GRE

I specialize in the Quantitative Reasoning sections of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). I am able to help test takers understand how to think and reason through problems to find solutions. Math questions on the GRE are usually not "direct" questions as a student would encounter in a math class. GRE questions require deeper understanding of the concepts, not just straight applications of formulas. That is how I am able to help, by giving test takers a "deep dive" into what type of thinking will be required of them on test day.

R,

R

I took several statistics courses in graduate school that required use of RStudio functions to analyze data sets. I am familiar with the process of reading online documentation of RStudio functions to find out how to get those functions to execute exactly what is needed for a given problem set or assignment. I also used RStudio extensively in my graduate research project; therefore, I feel confident in my abilities to help most students with their RStudio coding work.

Statistics,

Statistics

I have lots of experience with undergraduate and graduate statistics courses. I can help with univariate & bivariate descriptive statistics, probabilities for continuous and discrete distributions (Normal, t, binomial, chi-square, F, geometric, exponential, Poisson, etc.), inferential statistics (confidence intervals and hypothesis testing), regression modeling and analysis, and nonparametric statistical methods. I can explain how to apply formulas and obtain statistical results with the TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator, Excel, or R.

From completing and excelling in a graduate program full of statistical analyses to helping students for many years, I have lots of experience dealing with probability concepts. From basic rules and properties of probability, counting principles (permutations and combinations), continuous and discrete probability density functions, PDF visualizations, and probability and inverse probability computations in R, Excel, TI-83/TI-84 graphing calculator, etc., I am very prepared to help most students with their probability questions.

Trigonometry

I have many years of experience with helping students understand the six trigonometric functions, and the relationship between those six trig functions and the unit circle. As students progress through the course and learn new trig identities, I can help those students understand how to apply these identities, and how to use these identities to verify trig equations. I can help students understand how to find general and particular solutions to trig equations, how to apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines in order to solve triangles, and much more.

Excellent

Awesome!!!!! The Best tutor! He explained, and had patience to go over things. I did not understand.. Darrik wanted to make sure I understood all of the concepts. I highly recommend him.!!

Very supportive and encouraging throughout tutoring session

In this tutoring session, Derrick helped me understand the fundamentals of figuring out how to solve basic coding errors. The main things I like about Derrick's tutoring is that he meets me on the level I am currently at and communicates well while walking through problem solving. Derrick has helped me gain confidence when working in R studio as well as influenced me to not get frustrated when errors occur

Responsive, Knowledgeable, and patient

Derrick responded to my last minute request for tutoring my son in college statistics. My son has worked with other tutors but felt Derrick explained the concepts in a manner he could retain. We will be contacting Derrick again.

knows his stuff..

He definitely knows a lot about statistics and help me finish some of my work. I did feel like he was a little irritated with my lack of knowledge though, so i decided not to ask to much… overall he is an ok teacher

Kevin, 1 lesson with Derrick

knowledgeable and great at explaining,

Excellent, simplifying R, its use, syntax t-test, chi square, Clear, concise, explanation easy for someone who has never used this format before. Went above and beyond to explain and answer question regarding functionality. If I used Derrick earlier, I would have grasped a better understanding prior to now.

Better than a Bootcamp

Before I met with Derrick I had attended a bootcamp for foundational data science. I learned more in 3 hours with Derrick than I did for 10 weeks of YouTube videos in the bootcamp with no one-on-one instruction. Consider paying Derrick instead.

Keldan, 7 lessons with Derrick

great teacher really patient

It helped me with my assignment and answered all of my questions, related also he gave me his insights and manage time perfectly

Valeska, 2 lessons with Derrick

Learned more in an hour than a month of class!

Derrick has been great helping me with my Engineering Statistics course. He's been able to help me understand the overall concepts and how it all links together which is something my teacher at Rutgers has been unable to do. After working with Derrick for 30 minutes, I decided to establish sessions for the rest of the semester. Highly recommended!

Will, 9 lessons with Derrick

Very Knowledgeable and patient.

Derrick displayed a deep knowledge of ggplot2 and Palmerpenguins. I have a better grasp of programming language R now.
