Bio

I have tutored in various math subjects for 20 years now. I believe that anyone can learn this stuff; they just need to be taught correctly. I am also a former graduate teacher assistant for several undergraduate courses, where I led problem-solving sessions and interacted one-on-one with students of various learning styles. I specialize in "breaking down" concepts to make problem solving as simple and straight-to-the-point as possible. One of the main things that students notice about me is...

I am also a former graduate teacher assistant for several undergraduate courses, where I led problem-solving sessions and interacted one-on-one with students of various learning styles. I specialize in "breaking down" concepts to make problem solving as simple and straight-to-the-point as possible. One of the main things that students notice about me is my passion for math. I always tell my students that it's OK if they don't like math, because I like it enough for the both of us! My job is to help all my students succeed, no matter what!

I have studied and practiced mathematics for my entire life. I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and a master's degree in Applied Mathematics. Therefore, I have a very deep understanding of the subject matter, and can explain concepts in as many ways as necessary to help new students understand better. I can help with the use of different technologies, including TI-83, TI-84, Excel, and R, just to name a few.

R,

R

I took several statistics courses in graduate school that required use of RStudio functions to analyze data sets. I am familiar with the process of reading online documentation of RStudio functions to find out how to get those functions to execute exactly what is needed for a given problem set or assignment. I also used RStudio extensively in my graduate research project; therefore, I feel confident in my abilities to help most students with their RStudio coding work.

Statistics,

Statistics

I have lots of experience with undergraduate and graduate statistics courses. I can help with univariate & bivariate descriptive statistics, probabilities for continuous and discrete distributions (Normal, t, binomial, chi-square, F, geometric, exponential, Poisson, etc.), inferential statistics (confidence intervals and hypothesis testing), regression modeling and analysis, and nonparametric statistical methods. I can explain how to apply formulas and obtain statistical results with the TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator, Excel, or R.

Calculus,

Calculus

I specialize in single-variable calculus (Calculus I and II courses). I can help with differentiation concepts, rules, and applications, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. I also break down integration techniques, sequence/series convergence testing, and approximations with power series.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have many years of experience helping students understand algebraic and graphical concepts involving functions. I can break down characteristics of constant, polynomial, rational, radical, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions. I specialize in simplifying concept such as finding domains and ranges of functions, and finding and applying composite functions, and finding inverse functions, just to name a few.

Trigonometry,

Trigonometry

I have many years of experience with helping students understand the six trigonometric functions, and the relationship between those six trig functions and the unit circle. As students progress through the course and learn new trig identities, I can help those students understand how to apply these identities, and how to use these identities to verify trig equations. I can help students understand how to find general and particular solutions to trig equations, how to apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines in order to solve triangles, and much more.

Very patient and knowledgeable!

I appreciate the time with the theory of statistics that Derrick is willing to spend to ensure understanding. He has the ability to make concepts concrete to ensure understanding of why not just when to use theories and equations.

Christina, 3 lessons with Derrick

Really helpful with the material

Derrick helped me a lot understand concepts I was struggling with and started to grasp it quicker in a couple hours than I did throughout the semester and was also very quick and efficient in helping through the assignment.

Rafi, 3 lessons with Derrick

Knowledgable and capable.

Derrick taught me some processes in R Studio. I appreciated that he understood the program and helped me understand how it all worked. There was a lot to cover and feel we overcame a great hurdle today. Would use him again, probably will.

Christopher, 1 lesson with Derrick

Great listening skills/ Patient

Derrick is a master at pin pointing what I am overseeing and putting it in a more universal context! Would strongly recommend! (Especially for anything R studio related)

Connor, 1 lesson with Derrick

Knowledgeable and caring tutor

Derrick really took the time with me to go over any and all questions I had. Even outside the lesson, Derrick is super responsive and genuinely wants to see you succeed. Highly recommend and very grateful to have had the chance to work with him!
