Bio

Eleven years teaching Chemistry, eight years teaching German, and a long time coaching sports at all levels. I can tutor either subject, and am pretty good with high school math and science. I can also work with English. When living in Rome I taught Art History. I would enjoy tutoring Art History if I ever got the chance. I have taught Chemistry, German, and Art History at the college level. I have coached both men and women from 6 years old to 70.

In tutoring I like to use a lot of practice and concrete examples taken right form the book the student is using. Don't reinvent the wheel. Having someone to tell you right then if you are correct, or who can identify your mistake and show you where you went wrong can be a great help.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 involves beginning to find the relationships between numbers and unknowns, usually given letters, whose values can be found out when the problem is solved. It starts to use symbolic logic and sets of simple rules, such as you can do anything to an equation so long as you do it to both sides.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 begins to use more symbolic logic to solve more advanced problems. It often uses numbers such as i or logarithms to enable the solution of problems that could not be solved otherwise.
American History

American History

You can not accurately predict the future based on the past, but to understand the present and anticipate future events, knowledge of past events is still the best we have. It is all we have. I have always taken an active interest in our history as a nation, and look forward to helping more students understand both it and its importance.
Art History

Art History

I studied Art History at Johns Hopkins in graduate school alongside my work in German Literature. Later, while living in Rome, I taught Art History for the Loyola University of Chicago's Italian Program.
Biology

Biology

Biology is the science of life. It is necessary to understand our physical existence, and how we relate as living creatures to the world around us. We relate to both living systems; such as vegetable crops, animals, and bacteria; and non-living systems; such as weather, water, and minerals. Through a healthy understanding of our place in the world we can have a better life in it. I look forward to helping teach this.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have over 10 years experience teaching high school Intro Chemistry, college Intro Chemistry, high school AP and Honors Chemistry. I have lots of experience with Intro level Lab work and am good at making things understandable.
Elementary Science

Good clear English, either spoken or written, is essential to getting a job over minimum wage in the diversified and challenging economy we face today.
European History

European History

You can not accurately predict the future based on the past, but to understand the present and anticipate future events, knowledge of past events is still the best we have. It is all we have. I have always taken an active interest in European History, which has been and remains closely entwined with that of our own nation. I look forward to helping more students understand both it and its importance.
Geometry

Geometry

To learn geometry, it helps to be able to draw simple figures on paper. Just buying a tablet of square ruled paper to draw on can be an enormous help. My experience in land surveying, the original purpose of geometry, can be helpful in being able to give concrete explanations and examples, to show how to set up and solve problems.
German

German

I have over ten years' experience teaching German at the high school and college level. I have studied, worked, and traveled extensively in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the three main German speaking countries.
Physical Science

Physical Science

Physical science contains some concepts from Chemistry and Physics as they apply to everyday life around us. My extensive practical experience in teaching Chemistry, plus long experience coaching sports involving energy and motion, give me a practical background that can be very helpful in explaining concepts in this subject.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is mathematics that includes the setting up of fairly simple word problems that require figuring out the numerical relationships of train of changes between different things that happen. Arithmetic is fairly simple, the most important thing is figuring out the logical relationship.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus involves rather advanced levels of algebra where clear thinking and efficient study habits become ever more important. Although flashes of insight and solving problems in one's head make good fiction, clear handwriting, an orderly approach to problem solving, and plenty of paper can be of great practical help in the learning process.
Reading

Reading

I can be of help in teaching readers of all ages, from sounding out words for beginners, to identifying the main thrust of a paragraph, to examination of literary technique.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I can be of great assistance in guiding practice and constructively assessing errors in SAT Math problems. These skills can be improved with practice.

SAT writing measures the proficient use of standard English. This is not literary language; this is language of news reporting, business, and science. One does not have to be a perfect stylist to score well, but one does need to concentrate on clear communication according to established grammar rules. This is the approach I try to take in helping students do better.
World History

World History

You can not accurately predict the future based on the past, but to understand the present and anticipate future events, knowledge of past events is still the best we have. It is all we have. Great Tutor!

John has been a great Chemistry and Algebra 2 tutor for my son. We have been using him for about two months. He is always prompt (if not early), knowledgeable, easy to contact, reliable, easy going and relates well to my son. My son's grades have improved tremendously, from F's to B's. He has even stayed some over the appointment time when my son is on a roll of understanding the subject. He cares and he is a former teacher and he's truly interested in helping the student. I highly recommend him.

Outstanding

John R. was a perfect pick for our son. He needed help on ASVAB score so we hired John to tutor. Math was my sons weakest area on the practice ASVAB and he scored a 33 on practice test. A score minimum of 50 is now required. In just 10 sessions (two per week) my son took the ASVAB and scored over the minimum first try. We could not be more pleased with using John. I would rate 5 out of 5 stars!!
