Hi, my name is Sara and my fuzzy backpacking friend is my Golden doodle, Cooper! Yes, I have an MD degree and practiced medicine for a few years, but always wanted to teach school. I also wanted to have more time with my two daughters and my husband, so I entered the NC lateral entry program to become a certified teacher. The coursework was interesting and helpful. I taught full time in a public HS for three semester (Biology, Honors Biology, Ecology) and learned teaching, if you put your heart into it, takes more time than practicing medicine!
I moved to a part time position in the private K-12 school my daughters attended and had the best experience of my life teaching 7th grade Life Science. I have also taught High School level Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology. But one year, when a part time teacher had to leave one quarter into the year, I was asked to take over her 7th grade Math and 8th Grade Pre-Algebra classes. I am most proud of that year in teaching because I had so much fun and I was able to help those two classes dramatically improve their understanding and performance, based on their improvement on state testing scores from the previous year. Most importantly I think I helped those students, who felt like math failures, realize they could succeed.
I do not like to promote myself, but I have it from good sources (directly from my students and my daughters who attended the same school) that my students enjoyed my classes because I clearly presented materials and expectations. Though I am just beginning to tutor outside of the school setting, I was always readily available and loved when students would come for tutoring before or after school. I helped many students establish good study habits by meeting with them regularly to do homework.
I would love to help you find the joy in learning and help you feel accomplished and confident as a student. I am open to your input as to how I can best help you accomplish your goals. I am easy to contact and will be responsive in a timely manne
