Hello!

I am an extremely knowledgeable and effective tutor. In my several years at a major test prep company, I had one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the country. In less than a year, they promoted me to training the company's teachers in Upstate South Carolina. Hello!

I am an extremely knowledgeable and effective tutor. In my several years at a major test prep company, I had one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the country. In less than a year, they promoted me to training the company's teachers in Upstate South Carolina. I trained instructors on the SAT, ACT, GRE (the graduate school entrance exam), LSAT (law school), GMAT (business school), and MCAT (medical school).

In other words, I am expert in an incredibly broad range of subjects and have a proven track-record of producing first-class students. But more than that, I know how to teach. Most tutors know their subjects well, but what makes a really great tutor is a teacher who knows his students. I study my students carefully—learning how they learn, paying attention to what might discourage them, applauding them for succeeding in difficult challenges—so that I will be able to meet them in their weaknesses and not crush them with the difficulties that they must inevitably face on test day.

Another trait that makes me an excellent tutor is my versatility: I have broad interests in everything from biology and chemistry to linguistics and philosophy, I am equally at home in the humanities and the hard sciences. I excel at teaching “science kids” to write well and “humanities kids” to dream in numbers. I thoroughly enjoy "challenge" students and have had great success in working with clients with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and ASD. Whatever the learning difficulties, nothing brings me greater joy in my work than seeing a student who despised a subject build confidence in it and go on to study the field at an advanced level.

If you would like to see how I can help, simply send a message and I will be in touch as soon as possible. I am taking students on a first-come, first serve basis—and my schedule is rapidly filling.

I look forward to meeting with you!

ACT English

ACT English

Join the countless of ACT students who have asked me to help them achieve their goals— whether those be better-than-average results, last minute fine tuning, or even 99th percentile scores! Over the past decade, I have trained ACT teachers for two test prep companies (including one of which guarantees a 34 or better ). Rest assured, I am an expert on every aspect of the ACT across all four sections. Better yet, I am expert at teaching every aspect of the exam. Some tutors can boast terrific scores themselves but lack the skill of transferring their elite abilities to their students. That’s not me! (And, yes, grammar technically dictates that I should say “That’s not I.”)

Bottom line: If you are willing to put in the effort, I can get you the results.

ADHD

ADHD

Over my 15 years as a tutor, I have helped many ADD/ ADHD students to achieve their goals, whether those be to improve their study skills or achieve a top tier GRE or GMAT score to attend U Chicago or Harvard for graduate studies. I have experience working with ADHD students from elementary age through university, from STEM subjects to the humanities. Along the way, I have developed some unconventional perspectives on the best way to use neurodiversity to a student's advantage: I am a firm believer in working with your brain, not against it. The ADHD brain is adept at immersing in material--it loves having its working memory fully engaged. With the right guidance and motivation, this trait is a significant ally in the learning process. Give me a chance to show you!
Archaeology

Archaeology

I'd love to be your guide to the worlds of the ancient Mediterranean and the ancient Near East! Whether we are discussing famous archaeological sites (e.g., the Athenian Acropolis, Jesus' Jerusalem, or the wreck of the Kyrenia), the techniques of fieldwork, or what daily life was like in ancient times, you'll find my enthusiasm for bringing distant cultures to life infectious (I hope!). I am passionately and deeply curious about virtually everything about our past. In case you are curious, my own training is as a classicist and a biblical scholar. I began serious study of classical cultures at Furman University where I won the Greek prize and was president of the Beta Beta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honor society. During this time, I was privileged to serve as a teaching fellow for intermediate Latin. I have an interested in the digital humanities and was invited to serve as a Junior Fellow with Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, working on its Homer Multitext Project. My training in the ancient Near East mostly stems from my graduate studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I have translation abilities in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, though I wide-ranging interests in ancient languages (e.g., Coptic, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Ge'ez, Aramaic, and Syriac).
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As the father of a child on the spectrum, I'm very aware of how presumptuous it is to claim expert status, so I won't. However, I've had terrific results with ASD students, and I will claim that I am expert teacher in general. I find working with ASD clients to be particularly rewarding: I am a firm believer in the principle that you don't know what a student is capable of--whether on or off the spectrum--until you both give it your best shot. Even before I was a parent, I had a knack for connecting with children and adults with ASD. Some unique influences on my own childhood have given me a gift for entering into the worlds of others. I'm not sure that I'm the solution to all of your problems. But I won't give up on you or your child. (And you do not have to worry about judgment about meltdowns, if that's a factor, or a harsh response from me.) Let's see what we can accomplish!
Calculus

Calculus

Back in college, my roommate (now a successful MD) nearly dropped out of the premed program because he was getting destroyed by his introductory calculus course; somehow, I was able to motivate him to pull things together, and ever since, I have had soft spot for struggling calculus students. My students have taught me calculus is "hard" because of three things: 1) It's the first real exposure students have to rigorous mathematical language; 2) students usually lack the grounding algebra to do the algebraic bits of calculus; and 3) teachers either find the subject hard themselves—passing their confusion on to their students—or laughably easy—and so they under-explain the radically new ideas that stump students. However, calculus doesn't have to be taught this way; it doesn't have to be as hard as it seems—in fact, it can be a lot of fun!
Classics

Classics

I served as the president of the Beta Beta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honor society. I was invited to be a Junior Fellow with Harvard's classics think-tank, the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. There, I worked on the Homer Multi-text Project and worked alongside post-docs on the most important early Iliad MSS.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Since 2010, I have taught students like you how to stand out from their peers. Whether your dream is admission to an Ivy League PhD program or a full-ride at the local liberal arts college, I can help you win. Beware however: If you expect me to work on all aspects of your essay, you will have to put in the work to make every aspect your own. Choosing to work with me IS a choice to enroll in a writing master class—a fun class, chocked full of great content, a class radically different from all the other writing training (good and bad) that you have had to date. And I promise you this: You will never write the same way again!
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Non-elementary age dyslexic students are one of the most rewarding groups I work with. So much of our learning foundations are text-based, so struggles with information processing tend to accumulate to the point where many subjects that a student would actually love have fallen into loathing (or were never appreciated in the first place). I simultaneously teach students better information processing skills and the subject matter in very concrete, easy to process ways (both in STEM and the humanities). In addition to helping students navigate their coursework, I always consider it a special treat to help them (re)discover a passion for subjects that have long been a source of frustration and feelings of defeat. I am also very willing to work with elementary age dyslexic students, especially in a support role; however, I do not believe that I am yet a replacement for a dedicated reading specialist for the very early stages of reading.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Although helping students ace college and graduate school admissions tests (e.g., SAT, GRE, and GMAT) is my specialty, I love working with elementary school students. My wide-ranging teaching interests stem from the fact that I care deeply about my students and learning generally. I love to see students gain confidence, change their trajectories, and achieve what they once thought to be unattainable. Whether your student is struggling or ahead, whether you are looking for with reading and writing or math and science, I am sure that I can help! Incidentally, while I have worked with students as young as pre-K, I find that the digital environment —where I do the vast majority of my tutoring—is best suited to those above second grade.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

As a former college writing instructor turned professional writing coach, I've guided countless students and professionals to master the craft of compelling written expression. My revolutionary approach combines decades of writing expertise with proven strategies so effective that former students are building an EdTech company around them. What sets my method apart: - Deep mastery in crafting memorable narratives that captivate any audience - Systematic approach to uncovering and articulating your authentic voice - Proprietary writing techniques refined through 15+ years of specialized instruction - Clear, engaging teaching that builds both technical excellence and creative confidence Unlike conventional writing coaches who focus on surface-level editing, I transform how you approach writing itself. My comprehensive system develops every aspect of your writing craft - from storytelling to structure to style. Whether crafting academic papers, professional documents, or creative works, I provide the expertise to help you produce writing that stands out. Beware however: If you expect me to work on all aspects of your writing, you will have to put in the work to make every aspect your own. Choosing to work with me IS a choice to enroll in a writing master class—a fun class, chocked full of great content, a class radically different from all the other writing training (good and bad) that you have had to date. And I promise you this: You will never write the same way again!
Finite Math

Finite Math

In my work helping students achieve elite GRE and GMAT scores, I discovered that students are abysmally underprepared for finite math problems. The cookie-cutter problem solving students learn in algebra—and even many calculus—courses keeps them from thinking deeply about the structure of problems, which is what finite math is ultimately about. When teaching finite math—whether it be combinatorics, optimization, or Markov chains—I stress simple step-by-step process for exploring the nature of the problem, so that setting up the problem becomes straightforward. I also lean into applications, since finite math is one of the most powerful collection of tools we have for confronting real world situations.
GMAT

GMAT

As a former faculty trainer for the nation's largest test prep company, I've guided countless students to M7 acceptances. My proven system for the GMAT combines advanced teaching expertise with battle-tested techniques refined over 15+ years of work providing personalized tutoring. What truly sets me apart: • Proprietary strategies developed from training elite scorers—techniques unavailable anywhere else • Systematic approach to transferring high-level skills • Advanced techniques for dominating every GMAT section—IR, Quant, and Verbal • Transformative teaching that builds both technical mastery and test-day confidence Unlike tutors who simply scored well themselves, I systematically elevate how students approach the GMAT. My comprehensive method addresses every aspect - from content mastery to testing psychology. Whether targeting above-average results or M7 admission, I provide the expertise and personalized guidance to help you maximize your potential. The key differentiator: I don't just teach the GMAT; I reinvent how you engage with it. Within months of joining the industry's largest test prep company, I was promoted to training all instructors in my region. If you're willing to put in the effort, I'll provide the proven pathway to results—results that can open doors to the program of your dreams.
GRE

GRE

Join the countless GRE students I've helped achieve their goals—whether those be last minute fine-tuning or exceptional scores (330+) to clinch acceptance at the world's most prestigious schools! A former teacher trainer for the nation's largest GRE prep company, I am sought after test prep expert with a proven track record of success, securing students' admission to elite institutions like Harvard, Chicago, and the Sorbonne. So make no mistake: I bring battle-tested tactics that consistently produce top tier results on both the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the exam. I don't just teach the GRE - I transform how you approach it. Some tutors can boast terrific scores themselves but lack the skill of transferring their elite abilities to their students. With me, you’ve got both. Bottom line: If you're ready to put in the effort, I'll provide a proven pathway to your dream programs.
Greek

Greek

I am an expert in ancient Greek. As an undergrad in classics, I was invited to be a Junior Fellow with Harvard's classics think-tank, the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. There, I worked on the Homer Multi-text Project and worked alongside post-docs on the most important early Iliad MSS. More recently, I worked under Steve Runge editing the Lexham Discourse Greek New Testament. However, I have always been upset about how traditional teaching methods have added to the difficulty of learning Greek. Greek is a demanding language, but it does not have to be nearly as difficult as it has become. The way we teach Greek is fundamentally flawed and radically inefficient. Consequently, I have developed a number of custom resources (and draw on the strengths of several Greek curricula, including a modified immersion approach) to make Greek simple again. If Greek was easy enough for Greek toddlers, it shouldn’t take a Ph.D. to learn it as a second language! In case you are curious, I began serious study of Greek at Furman University where I won the Greek prize and was president of the Beta Beta Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honor society. Since then, I have studied advanced Greek with world-class Koine scholars like Peter Gentry, Rob Plummer, and Steve Runge (who supervised my internship in Greek linguistics). My present interests in linguistics center on understanding information structure and on applying functional discourse grammar to Greek.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I'd love to introduce you to the fascinating and thrilling world of ancient Hebrew! American students commonly find the language difficult because it operates very differently from English in several important ways. I will ease you into the experience and prepare you for the difficulties by giving you simple principles that will enable you to explain the most difficult parts to yourself. In addition, we will focus on building real reading ability from the start, so that you aren't drowning in looking up words and parsing forms when you finally get into the text. In case you are curious, I began serious study of Hebrew under while working on my M.Div. at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Since then, my appreciation for Semitic languages in general has grown tremendously, and I have dabbled in Aramaic, Syriac, and Coptic—as well as modern Hebrew. Eventually, I'd like to develop strong reading ability in all of these languages (along with Ugartic, Akkadian, Hittie, and Ge'ez). At the moment, however, I am most familiar with Greek and Latin.
HESI (Nursing exam)

HESI (Nursing exam)

As a former instructor trainer for the nation's largest test prep company, I've guided countless students to exceptional scores and program admissions. My proven system combines advanced teaching methodology with battle-tested techniques refined through years of helping nursing students excel. What truly sets my approach apart: Systematic approach to mastering all HESI sections - Math, Reading, and Science Decades of experience helping students achieve elite on huge variety of entrance exams (SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.) Deep expertise in both teaching methodology and test mechanics Clear, engaging instruction that builds both technical mastery and test-day confidence My comprehensive method addresses every aspect of the exam - from content mastery to testing psychology. Whether targeting above-average results or admission to highly selective nursing programs, I provide the expertise and personalized guidance to help you maximize your potential.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I love working with homeschool families. In fact, for the last several years, I have averaged roughly 1000 hours a year teaching homeschoolers core subjects in both STEM and the humanities. I would love to be a part of your program in whatever capacity you need! I have a special heart for at home education as I was homeschooled myself from kindergarten through 8th grade. It became difficult for our family to stay on top of the demands of schooling through high school (due to family circumstances), and I was placed in a private classical Christian school. My older brother, however, was homeschooled all the way through to graduation.
ISEE

ISEE

I am a veteran test prep expert with a specialty of helping students achieve elite test scores on college and graduate school admissions exams. Admission to top private schools and boarding schools is a similarly competitive process. Let me help you make the process as straightforward as it can be. Don't let the lack of a stellar ISEE score stand in your way!
Latin

Latin

I love Latin, and I love teaching—which is why I hate to see students struggle to learn a language that should be straightforward and fun. It took me 6 years of schooling in Latin, both at a classical Christian school and my B.A. in classics (i.e. Latin, Greek, and Greco-Roman civilization), to realize finally that way we teach Latin is fundamentally flawed and radically inefficient. Consequently, I have developed a number of custom resources (and draw on the strengths of several Latin programs, including a modified immersion approach) to make Latin simple again. If Latin was easy enough for Roman toddlers, it shouldn’t take a PhD to learn it as a second language! My own Latin background includes work in classical, patristic, and medieval authors. While still an undergrad, I was invited to serve as a teaching fellow for intermediate Latin. I was also privileged to serve as a Junior Fellow with Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, working on its Homer Multitext Project. I encourage my students to strive for perfection on the AP Latin exam (or IB Latin exam)--and other measures of achievement like the National Latin Exam, National Latin Vocabulary, and National Classical Etymology Exam.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I love teaching students about how to do things with words (and how these linguistic moves came to be). While my interests are wide-ranging, I have a special passion for all things pragmatics, morphosyntax, and the historical linguistics of IE languages. I am particularly focused on information structure in VO languages and grammaticalization. My theoretical default is functional linguistics with strong influences from cognitive linguistics; most of my work has been in the functional discourse analysis of texts in ancient Greek. I have experience in Homeric, classical, and Koine Greek, medieval and classical Latin, classical and modern Hebrew, and modern German.
LSAT

LSAT

Tired of the endless categories that of LR and RC question types used by 7Sage and other mainstream test prep companies? Have you plateaued in your LSAT progress? Get straightforward solutions to these (and many other common LSAT) frustrations from a master tutor with thousands of hours of experience. Over the years, I've developed custom strategies and honed my diagnostic skills so that I can confidently offer you a proven path to success.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

As an admissions and test prep specialist, I've guided countless students to acceptances at world-renowned programs through compelling personal statements. My revolutionary approach combines decades of writing expertise with proven strategies so effective that former students are building an EdTech company around them. What sets my method apart: Deep mastery in crafting memorable narratives that make admissions officers take notice Systematic approach to uncovering and articulating your unique value proposition Proprietary writing techniques refined through 15+ years of specialized instruction Clear, engaging teaching that builds both technical excellence and creative confidence Unlike editors who simply polish drafts, I transform how you approach writing itself. My comprehensive system develops every aspect of your application narrative - from storytelling to structure to style. Whether targeting elite PhD programs or full-ride scholarships, I provide the expertise to help you craft applications that stand out. Ready to develop essays that showcase your true potential? Let's chase your dreams!

Over the past decade, I have trained SAT teachers for three test prep companies (including one of which guarantees a 1500 or better ). Rest assured, I am an expert on every aspect of the PSAT across all three sections. Better yet, I am expert at teaching every aspect of the exam. Some tutors can boast terrific scores themselves but lack the skill of transferring their elite abilities to their students. But if you are willing to put in the effort, I can get you the results!
Regents

Regents

For decades now, I have loved coaching students to the highest levels of success on their placement exams. As an AP scholar myself, I have wide ranging interests and expertise. Over the years, I have developed rarely taught methods for teaching and memorizing content across STEM and the humanities. Whether you are prepping for the AP exams, the Regents, the IB program, my tactics will streamline the studying and testing process. I will teach you what I wish I knew about the exams back in the day--the right study skills can shave countless hours off one's workload AND make top percentile performances so much easier. Many students struggle with free response questions (FRQs), document-based questions (DBQs), and various forms of the short essay. I promise these skills can be taught--and mastered. The reason why so many struggle here is that they have nearly never been thoroughly trained on core skills in problem-solving, analysis, and writing.

Rest assured, I am an expert on every aspect of the Digital SAT across both sections of the exam (and all three subject areas as Wyzant divides the competencies). Better yet, I am expert at teaching every aspect of the exam. Some tutors can boast terrific scores themselves but lack the skill of transferring their elite abilities to their students. But if you are willing to put in the effort, I can get you the results—even when it comes to the most fiendish of probability questions.

Study Skills

Since 2002, I have regularly taught study skills to a wide variety of ages and abilities--from elementary school to graduate studies, from struggling students to the scholarship winners. In my study skills tutoring, I will work with students on self-discipline, organization, memory techniques, and effective ways of processing new information. Depending on the age of the client, I might teach ways to remember to turn in an assignment, how to memorize all of those pesky dates for social studies, or how to get your work done quickly. For graduate students, my studies skills sessions incorporate insights gained from cutting-edge neuroscience that leverage a student's abilities to deal with memorizing literally hundreds of vocabulary items each week or help with fighting the evils of procrastination in working on your doctoral dissertation.

Patient, intelligent, kind, and incredibly hard working tutor

If I could give a 10-star review, I would. James is patient, intelligent, kind, and incredibly hard working. He truly cares for his students’ and their growth, in both the test-taking and application process. James pinpointed my weaknesses in both Quant and Verbal. He explained solutions clearly, and when I couldn’t quite grasp a concept, he found new ways to teach until I truly understood. James helped me get the GRE score of my dreams. As for applications, James helped me get into Columbia Business School. More than once, James hopped on a call with me, completely unplanned, to help finalize my application before the deadline. I am incredibly grateful for James's invaluable support throughout the entire process.

Thanks for the high praise, Sabrina! Your own incredible hard work was pivotal in your success. I'm sure that it will lead to further success in B-school—and beyond!

James had been essential to my studying process

Been working with James for many months now and his structured approach and methodologies for each topic category and question type have been exactly the organization I need to keep my motivation up and be efficient with my studying. James also cares about my success nearly as much as I do, he’s always available and offering tips and approaches that are tailored to me. Would highly recommend.

I highly recommend James to anyone looking for a GRE tutor (and I'm willing to bet for any of the other exams he tutors on). James is extremely knowledgeable about exam content and processes and has spent a lot of time dedicated towards methods of success for all types of learners. He's super passionate about the work and explains concepts very clearly and with many examples for visual learners like me. Honestly can't recommend him enough.

Best Tutor

My children have had many private tutors and my son respects James the most. My son also tutors math in the neighborhood at Mathnasium and follows James' methods.

One of the Best Decisions We've Ever Made!

James L. was the best choice we could possibly have made in selecting an SAT tutor for our son Anthony. James L. was meticulous, exceptionally prepared and thorough, exceedingly knowledgeable about the test and platform, and most importantly, he was able quickly to discern our son's learning strengths, weaknesses, and best opportunities for improvement. Anthony immediately took to James L.'s lead and frequently reported to us in concrete terms how he was identifying and addressing his weaknesses and gaining both mastery and confidence. Anthony went from a 1300 PSAT score in Sept. 2024, to 1450 on his final practice test working with James L. - a score he matched exactly on the June 25 SAT - he knew he was well prepared and the results speak for themselves. We looked at all the options as he got ready to prepare for his first SAT - the big test prep companies, group sessions, and tutoring platforms. As soon as we read James L.'s profile on Wyzant we knew working 1-on-1 would be best for Anthony - he's a good learner but responds best when he has a positive relationship with an instructor. Having our son work with James L. was one of the best decisions we've ever made!
