Reading a book when you find it hard to recognize the words is not fun. Watching your child struggle to read is agonizing. You need a tutor who can help your child quickly so they don't get further behind.

I’ve helped families just like yours. I have 20 years experience as a reading interventionist in a public charter school and as a private reading tutor. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis of dyslexia or needs a different approach to reading instruction than what they are receiving in school, I can help.

Learning to read is not a natural process like learning to talk. It must be taught explicitly and systematically with time for practice and review.

I teach reading using a Speech to Print approach which means we use the sounds from the words we speak and match them to written symbols (letters). Reading, writing and spelling are taught; improvement in one skill results in improvement of the others. Instead of memorizing spelling rules, sight words, or syllable types spelling patterns are learned and applied to read words. This allows younger students to read complex words like "ski" and "creature" instead of only simple words like "cat" and "hen".

Speech to Print offers several advantages: learning is quicker since we start with sounds students already know; it is effective with students who struggle with traditional print to speech methods commonly taught in schools and students with dyslexia and other diagnoses; (3) it’s less taxing on the brain since it focuses on patterns, not rigid rules; integrating reading, writing, and spelling reinforces learning all school subjects; using sound-letter relationships gives students confidence to attack unfamiliar words instead of guessing; (6) reading a wide range of texts results in progress more quickly than limiting texts at a specific reading level.

My approach may be different than what you and your child is used to. However, if the current instruction isn't working, then maybe it’s time to try something else.

I am a reading and math intervention specialist with 10 + years of experience. I have tutored exclusively online since 2018. I am experienced with common core and other state standards. I am experienced with a variety of reading programs including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Fountas & Pinnell, DIBELS, and Reading Simplified. I use a Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) methodology when tutoring math. I firmly believe that students need solid conceptual understanding of math concepts before they can have procedural understanding.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting using the Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) program over the last 5 years with K-5 students. The foundation of HWT is to use a multi-sensory approach to accommodate different learning styles and to make the process of learning print and cursive fun. Additionally, I have used HWT to undo poor writing habits and reteach correct letter formation. Poor handwriting often results in a student's reluctance to do any sort of writing in school. By using play-doh and small Lego pieces to strengthen hands and improve fine motor skills, writing becomes less of a chore. I also concentrate on improving core and lower arm muscle strength and maintaining proper posture while writing. Put together I have seen significant improvement in legibility.

I have worked as a reading interventionist at a public school and as a private reading tutor since 2005. I started tutoring exclusively online in 2017. I specialize in helping struggling readers, including kids with dyslexia, ADHD, and auditory, visual, and speech processing disorders. Children need foundational skills to be good readers. I believe children must have letter-sound recognition and be able to break apart and put together the sounds that make up words. Mastery of these skills builds fluency and comprehension. I teach these skills in an authentic way by using interesting stories to build accuracy, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

I specialize in helping struggling readers, including kids with dyslexia, ADHD, and auditory, visual, and speech processing disorders. Phonics is a fundamental skill that many of my students lack and so I have extensive experience in teaching this skill. I use auditory, kinesthetic, and visual methods to help students improve their reading ability and confidence.

Very patient and creative

Rita is a great tutor! She has been very patient with my son and always knows how to engage him. She is patient with him and encourages him to sound out the words for himself so that it builds his self-confidence. She has worked on his fluency, vocabulary, and writing so far and has a lot of creative games to make it fun.

Friendly, gentle, and easy to work with

Rita tutored my 1st grader last night for the first time. She was wonderful to work with and very friendly. She seemed knowledgable and was able to interact with my daughter in a way that made learning fun. We cannot wait to work with her again.
