I believe that every person seeking trumpet lessons has the innate ability to become successful if given the right tools. Whether you are a beginner just starting out, an intermediate player preparing for auditions, an advanced student refining your skills, or a retired professional looking to get your “chops” back, I have successfully coached students in all of these areas.

Each lesson is uniquely crafted around the student’s goals and learning style. I place a strong emphasis on fundamentals, musicality, and consistent practice habits (scaled to the student’s level) so that progress is steady and rewarding. My ultimate goal as a teacher is not only to help you play the trumpet better, but also to guide you toward becoming an independent learner rather than a dependent student—building the confidence and tools you need to continue growing on your own.

I bring over 25 years of teaching and performing experience to my lessons. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Fort Lewis College and am an active freelance trumpet player throughout the Charlotte region and the eastern seaboard, performing with bands, churches, and professional ensembles. Since 2015, I have played in pit orchestras for over 20 musicals, in addition to sharing the stage with world-renowned artists such as The Temptations, Wayne Bergeron, Bob Mintzer, John Fedchock, and Chris Vadala.

Whether lessons are in-person at my studio in Monroe, NC, online (Zoom, Skype, FaceTime), or in-home, I strive to create a supportive, challenging, and inspiring environment that motivates students of all ages to reach their full potential.

ADHD

ADHD

I have successfully taught trumpet to students with ADHD by creating flexible, engaging lesson structures that keep them focused and motivated. By breaking down concepts into manageable steps and incorporating movement, creativity, and personalized goals, I help students channel their energy into productive practice while building confidence and musical growth.
Ear Training

Ear Training

During my undergraduate studies at Fort Lewis College and over 50 hours of graduate work at New Mexico State University, I developed a deep foundation in ear training. I not only strengthened my own skills in interval recognition, transcription, and harmonic analysis, but also taught and reinforced these concepts with peers and students. This experience allows me to integrate ear training naturally into my trumpet lessons—helping students improve intonation, develop improvisational skills, and become more well-rounded musicians.
Music History

Music History

During my undergraduate studies at Fort Lewis College and over 50 hours of graduate work at New Mexico State University, I gained a strong foundation in music history, studying everything from early music to contemporary works. I learned how to connect historical context with performance, which not only deepened my own playing but also shaped the way I teach. By sharing these insights with my students, I help them understand the cultural and stylistic influences behind the music—making them more informed, expressive, and versatile musicians.

I’m Michael Murphy, a trumpet performer and educator with over 25 years of experience teaching everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals looking to get their chops back. I hold a degree in Music Performance from Fort Lewis College and have completed over 50 hours toward a master’s degree at New Mexico State University. I teach from my Monroe, NC home studio, offer in-home lessons, and work with students across multiple online platforms. I’ve been invited to audition twice for the Charlotte Symphony, performed in over 20 musicals, and had the honor of playing with The Temptations, Wayne Bergeron, Bob Mintzer, and more. My students have gone on to earn music degrees from top schools like the Jacobs School of Music and beyond. Whether it’s fundamentals, lead playing, or improvisation, I help students play with confidence and joy.
