My name is Alexandra. I am a former college professor and formally trained writing tutor. In 2024-25, my HS students had stellar results on AP exams and IB papers, achieved A grades, and received honors in nationwide essay contests. Since 2018, almost 95% of my reporting AP students have earned 5s on their exams. My college and dissertation clients also received superior results at T20 universities and elite doctoral programs.

I have two decades of experience teaching or tutoring Political Science [subfields American Government, Public Policy, Political Theory]; Writing; US & European History; American & European Literature; Greek & Roman History/Mythology; and European Art History. In addition to tutoring, I offer academic editing, and specialize in helping with literature reviews, research skills, paper organization, and textual analysis.

At the high school level, I only tutor for AP/IB classes, dual enrollment classes, or writing-intensive classes at rigorous schools that no longer offer AP/IB. I work with students at many of the top feeders to Harvard, etc. I tutor AP US Government and Politics, AP US History (APUSH), AP European History, AP English Language, and AP English Literature.

I have always received strong teaching evaluations. A senior professor said he had never seen a teacher receive as much universal praise from students and fellow professors. My former students inducted me as an honorary faculty member of a campus leadership group in recognition of my exceptional teaching and mentoring.

I am flexible, humorous, and approachable. I don't care how much you are struggling or how unprepared you might feel. If you are willing to work and incorporate the new reading/writing strategies I teach you, I WILL be able to help you. I am extremely patient with students who are trying, but still struggling. I also know how to push elite students. My former students have been admitted to the best colleges & grad schools and won some of the most prestigious postgraduate awards in the world.

American History

American History

I taught multiple upper-level college seminars in American political and legal history. I have taught topics across the entire chronological scope of US History, including things like the politics of the American Founders and the rhetorical strategies of interest groups in the Civil Rights Movement. In my Ph.D. program, I was given specialized training in the methodology of history and am prepared to help students develop the document analysis skills required to succeed in college courses and advanced high school courses like AP US History.
Art History

Art History

I have given professional talks and written multiple research papers examining the politics of medieval, Renaissance, and early modern European art and architecture. While I am comfortable helping students with the general history of Ancient Mediterranean and European art through WW1, my areas of specialization are Roman art, French Medieval art and architecture, and Medieval and Renaissance Italian art/architecture.
Classics

Classics

I am not a Classics language expert, but I have taught Plato and Aristotle; an entire course on Roman political thought (including reviews of history and literature); and wrote a chapter on Classical Rhetoric for my dissertation. I have also taught the great classical authors and classical mythology as part of Great Books survey courses.
English

English

If you have used "English" to search for a Literature tutor--I have taught a number of important American novels (Great Gatsby, Invisible Man, etc.) in classes on American politics and history. I also took multiple classes on politics and literature in graduate school and have given multiple professional conference presentations in this subfield For anyone who has used "English" to search for a Writing tutor--I have over a decade of experience working with writers at both the remedial and advanced level, both as a tutor and a college instructor. I have a proven record of helping students improve their writing (and grades).
European History

European History

For my Ph.D. I studied the history of European political theory. This required me to learn general European history, European literary and art history, and history of European philosophy. My own research on the history of European architecture drew significantly on history/historiography scholarship, and I taught multiple seminars that were cross-listed as European History classes.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I have a Ph.D. in Political Science and have taught Introduction to American Politics and Government multiple times. My background makes me a great choice for students who need help with the new AP Government exam, which now has greater emphasis on quantitative reasoning and primary sources. I am conversant in Congress, Presidency, Supreme Court decisions, political parties, public opinion, political psychology, interest groups and lobbying, and public policy, among other subfields.
Literature

Literature

I taught literature texts in various types of politics, history, and Humanities classes for over a decade.
Political Science

Political Science

My Ph.D. is in Political Science with a first field in Political Theory and a second field in American Politics. I have published in a leading book review journal and given many conference papers and invited talks in the field. I have taught the subject for 10 years as a graduate instructor and professor.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

When I was a college professor, I taught my department's undergraduate thesis class, providing supervision at every stage of the process. I also provided additional advising for students who were writing theses in my areas of specialization. As a tutor, I have helped many students, particularly graduate/PhD students with dissertations and theses, and my clients have gone on to win departmental and university-wide awards, as well as national grants, thanks to my assistance.
United States History

United States History

I have a PhD that includes areas of specialization in American history and politics, taught American History courses at the college level, and have a very strong record tutoring students in Advanced Placement US History (APUSH); my students typically receive good classroom grades and scores of 5 on the exam. I also have a strong record of helping college and graduate students write successful papers and theses in United States history.
Writing

Writing

I was formally trained as a writing tutor in graduate school and, as a professor, taught undergraduates how to write proper papers. I have successfully worked with remedial students, advanced high school and undergraduate students, and graduate students. Over the course of 1-3 months, I can turn struggling students into independent writers who are able to identify and correct their most common patterns of error. I can help advanced students or graduate students with thesis construction, literature reviews, organizing a large paper, conducting proper research, and more.

Knowledgeable and supportive tutor

Alexandra of teaching is so wonderful and refreshing!! She’s patient and supportive, but really knows how to motivate my daughter and make her more understanding in AP Gov. Even though this is our first lesson, we definitely go back with her tutoring.

Great Tutor

Alexandria was a great tutor she helped to edit my Major Paper Thesis on a micro and macro level and let me turn in a complete draft that needed very few updates from my committee.

Great teacher, personable and thorough

Very nice teacher, organized and helpful. Alexandra has been a great support to my daughter who was struggling in her APUSH class. After a few weeks she’s managed to improve her overall grade and understands the material so much more. Alexandra is also very personable and funny which my daughter really appreciates. :)

Very professional and knowledgeable tutor

We are so lucky to meet Alexandra in Wyzant. My daughter was pretty struggling in AP Gov. She barely accomplished school homework, and almost gave up this subject. Since Alexandra started to help my daughter, her confidence level on PA gov was dramatically improved. She was not panic anymore. She turned out pretty enjoying AP Gov at the end and felt she learned a lot in this course. That was a really amazing change. Both my daughter and I are truly grateful. My daughter is very exciting to have Alexandra's guidance in her future humanities courses!

Knowledgeable, responsive, adaptive to students needs.

Alexandra has given lessons to my kid who needed extra help in their AP subject which has helped her tremendously. She was quickly able to assess the gaps, prepare in advance, review her work promptly and understand our needs. We are looking forward to more sessions with her.

great match

Alexandra is amazing! She helped my daughter understand the topics in detail and fixed the disconnect with her teacher. She is our third and final tutor. We wish we had met her sooner!
