Bio

I have been teaching for as long as I can remember--since I was able to line my stuffed animals on the floor and teach them the ABCs. I began teaching human students in 2003, and I loved every minute of working with students.
As a homeschooling teacher and parent, I especially enjoy my work with homeschooled students who need to improve their writing, their grammar, or their reading ability.

As a homeschooling teacher and parent, I especially enjoy my work with homeschooled students who need to improve their writing, their grammar, or their reading ability.

One of the best feelings ever is the pride I have in my students when they move from developing writers, worried about their abilities, to practicing writers, finding their voice and style. As a tutor, I have worked with students from grade four to adult, from classroom poetry assignments to Master's degree thesis papers to editing and proofreading novels.

I write, too. I write articles and web content, short stories, and essays. I can help you to improve your existing writing, encourage your efforts, and provide you with the instruction that will help you become a better writer. I know MLA, APA, and Chicago style formatting for academic writing.

I have a love of literature combined with a love of the English language, with all its quirks. I am able to explain to students the whys and hows of grammar rules in a way that makes the rules easy to remember and to understand. I've worked with ESL students often enough to recognize the common writing errors and to explain why we do this or don't do that in English.

If you are looking for a tutor to help you become a better reader or writer, I am the tutor for you. Sure, I could just look at your writing, mark up the mistakes, or even fix the mistakes for you, but if you want to grow as a reader and writer, making the need for a tutor obsolete, then I want to help you.

As a teacher of English, reading, and writing, and as an editor and proofreader, I know my grammar. And I can help you learn grammar, too. I tend to teach grammar without using the traditional "scholarly" words that we only see in grammar books. I prefer to explain grammar in ways that students can grasp immediately.

I have been teaching reading and writing for more than ten years. In order to become a writer, one must read, read, read--and read well. Reading is more than just knowing the words on the page. Comprehension and understanding are required, and I am able to help students reach understanding as an independent reader.

After years of writing lesson plans and teaching lessons for US and World History at the middle school level, I am able to assist students at almost any level, with almost any US or World History topic. Geography and culture are important parts of any History study, and I am well versed in those topics as well. I enjoy teaching and talking about history. Generally, I help students make connections between the past and the present--the real reason for us to study history.
