Hello, my name is Hallel! I have a PhD in Music Theory from the University of Oregon and over ten years of teaching experience. At age 14, I began teaching piano lessons and continued to do so well into my 20s. Beginning in my freshman year of college, I also became a tutor in music theory for the university’s peer tutoring program. Upon entry into graduate school, I was awarded a teaching fellowship in music theory and proceeded to teach music theory classes for music majors and minors for seven years.

I love to teach. As a teacher, I live for that Aha! moment that my students have when a concept finally clicks. My entire approach in teaching is centered on helping students not only achieve their goals, but to surpass what they thought they were capable of. I am encouraging, patient, lively, and fun!

I taught undergraduate music theory classes, form and analysis classes, and specialized music theory courses for seven years during my doctoral studies. Many of these teaching positions included composition assignments. I was involved in creating, grading, and/or teaching students the art of music composition in specific genres or styles.
General Music

General Music

I have studied music for almost 40 years and have had a wide range of musical education/application with teaching opportunities. I began studying piano at age seven, I began teaching piano at age 14, and held a steady performing career as a student. I hold a B.M. in Piano Performance from Idaho State University (2006). I began a M.M. in Piano Pedagogy at University of Oregon and eventually finished a PhD. in Music Theory with a secondary in Ethnomusicology at the same university (2012). I have also studied percussion, bassoon, trombone, tenor saxophone, voice, and Caribbean steel pan.

As part of my doctoral studies, I also earned a secondary supporting area in Ethnomusicology (which is the equivalent to a masters degree). Many of my classes and research were focused on the ethnological affects of certain types of music on groups of people throughout music history.

I have taught music theory in some form for over 20 years, first as a piano teacher beginning at age 14; then also as music theory peer tutor during my bachelor’s studies; then as a graduate teaching fellow in music theory during my masters and doctoral studies.
