Hello! I'm an educator that loves to help young people reach their goals. I have been tutoring math and science since 2016 and I became a certified 9-12 science teacher in 2018.

Hello! I'm an educator that loves to help young people reach their goals. I have been tutoring math and science since 2016 and I became a certified 9-12 science teacher in 2018.

I am excited to help students in this area love learning, whether the area of challenge is science, social studies, or even test prep. I love teaching and seeing that "a-ha" moment when everything makes sense. My passion is showing students how to connect the dots between components of an ecosystem or cause-effect relationships in history.

In my home state of Florida, I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy and a B.A. in History and developed interactive science programs with the Museum of Science and Industry. While in college, I was a substitute teacher with Hillsborough County Public Schools and a research assistant at the University of South Florida Library, connecting students and faculty members with the resources needed to succeed. In North Carolina, I have worked in informal education in City of Raleigh and City of Durham Parks and Recreation, and as a formal educator for Franklin County Schools.

I have a well-rounded STEM background including biology, chemistry, geology, robotics, ecology, mathematics (including calculus). I know how to connect complex theories and models to everyday experience for illuminating analogies. My experience with hands-on, experimental science will help you or your student succeed in school, and carry the essential concepts on into the real world.

Biology

Biology

Biology is fun! I recently graduated with a degree in Environmental Science and Policy, which means I took several biology courses. I earned credit for both Biology I (Cellular Processes) and II (Biological Diversity) at the college level. Just a bonus if you're interested, I also love talking about plant identification and being outside!
Chemistry

Chemistry

I love chemistry! As a part of my degree program for Environmental Science and Policy, I earned an "A" in Introductory chemistry, General Chemistry 1 & 2, a "B+" in Organic Chemistry 1 and an "A" in all my labs. I want to make chemistry fun and something that will stick with you long after the test like a cation sticks with an anion! I was an instructor for the Museum of Science and Industry before I relocated to NC, so I know how to teach science in an interactive, memorable way.
Ecology

Ecology

I lead environmental education programs in the Raleigh area and I am prepared to help students understand the theories behind how all things in nature are connected. I am experienced teaching environmental science to elementary through adults.

Helped daughter with Math 1

Kerissa helped my daughter for several months with Math 1. Kerissa was easy to work with and was quick to respond to any questions. My daughter loved working with Kerissa and it really have her confidence in math, which she considers her weakest subject. I am happy to report that my daughter made an A on her EOC exam, thanks in part to Kerissa' s help!

Patient, Kind

Goes above and beyond. My sons math grade has gone up by 21 points. Very patient with my son and my shortcomings as a parent in regards to helping my son with math. Stays in contact by phone, email, or through website with progress or issues in areas that need to be addressed.

Patient & positive

Kerissa works so well with our son. She is knowledgeable, very patient and upbeat, and goes at a pace that is comfortable for him. If he doesn't feel comfortable, he isn't going to be able to keep up and absorb the information.
