My BA is in Linguistics from UC Berkeley, and I am bilingual in Spanish. I have great rapport because I like and respect the students I tutor. I am patient, resourceful, clear, and professional - on time and prepared.

I have more than ten years' experience working with elementary-aged children, tutoring them in subjects ranging from ESl/English to reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and math. I aim to instill in elementary-level students a love of learning, along with the skills necessary to explore knowledge and succeed in school. A crucial element for students is the ability to monitor and control anxiety, in order to allow success.

I have 13 years of teaching and tutoring elementary math. I was hired by American Career College (ACC), a private, post-secondary vocational school in Los Angeles in July 2000, to set up and develop the math tutoring program (Note: basic math, i.e., fractions, percentage, ratio, decimals, up to geometry and pre-algebra). In 2013-14, I was a math instructor at Charter College (CC) in Canyon Country. Math was not my best subject in school, so I understand and empathize with students. I enjoy tutoring math to children and adults. My aim is to instill confidence and skill. The key to doing well in math is proper study preparation and ability to control math anxiety. I offer mentoring in both crucial areas.

I have tutored and taught English/ESL, including grammar, punctuation, essay and business writing for 20 years. I have helped my students write and (rewrite) personal statements for college applications. I worked as a freelance proofreader of reference books and have proofread countless essays. I have helped colleagues improve the mechanics and structure of their business writing. I have written marketing materials for the GED program at the vocational school, where I worked from 2000 through mid-2012. I can help you at our earliest mutual convenience.

My education and work experience are strong in ESL. Teaching English as a Second Language has been a major focus in my career. I have a BA in Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley, with an emphasis in English. I have taught and tutored ESL adults and children of all levels with nearly eleven years as a private ESL/academic subjects tutor, and more than twenty years’ experience as a classroom ESL instructor. I create an optimum environment for acquiring English by developing interesting methods for teaching conversation, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. I coordinated teacher workshops for sharing successful techniques and materials. From 1995 through 2003, and from 2013 to present, I have given private lessons to individuals and pairs as ESL tutor to children and adults in the Korean community.

I was hired to set up and develop the math (basic math, i.e., percentage, ratio, decimals, up to geometry and prealgebra) and English (reading, grammar, and vocabulary) tutoring program at the Los Angeles, Anaheim and Ontario campuses for the Wonderlic Ability to Benefit (ATB) entrance test. Further, I tutored adult students for the ATB entrance exam and was likewise employed as a GED (high school equivalency) instructor of adults at Charter College, Canyon Country.

In Fall 2012, I completed the work for a 12-unit certificate in Skills for Healthy Aging Resources Program (SHARP) - Gerontology - at College of the Canyons, Valencia. I received all A's on the academic papers I submitted. In my 38-year career in education (English, math, GED, and ESL), I have taught/tutored English writing and grammar, punctuation. Further, I have corrected essays and papers for ESL-level students and native speakers/writers.

How to Succeed at Reading Comprehension Here are helpful steps: 1. Time yourself for accuracy on study exercises, i.e., set time limits, as well as goals for percentage correct. For example, aim to finish a reading text and seven questions in 10 minutes, with 5 correct answers out of seven. Then, decrease the time to nine minutes, 6 right, etc. Always do exercises with goals. 2. Listen carefully to instructions on a test. How much time do you have to complete the test? 3. Watch the time carefully. 4. Read and follow the directions. 5. Read all questions completely, paying attention to words like always, only, and all. Look for negative words like not, never, except, unless, etc. What is the question asking? 6. Ask yourself what the main idea of the text is; often the main idea is stated in the first or last sentence. 7. Answer the questions you are sure of first. Don’t second guess yourself. 8. Use the meaning of the whole sentence to help you with unfamiliar words. 9. When being tested on long passages, read the questions before you read the passage. 10. Don’t get stuck on a particular question; move on. You might code questions you skip. Give a 3 to very difficult questions, a 2 to difficult ones, and a 1 next to those you think you can answer. Go back to the 1’s first after you’ve seen all the questions. 11. Text excerpts and questions are arranged in order from easiest to hardest. 12. When you answer questions that refer directly to lines in the text, don’t rely on your memory. Go back and re-read the text. HOW DO I TAKE A MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST? 1. Read the first part of the question very carefully, 2. Try to answer the question in your mind before looking at the choices. 3. Do not stop reading when you think you have the correct answer. 4. As you read the choices, eliminate those which are obviously incorrect; then go back and reconsider the remaining choices carefully. Try to get the answer choices down to two. 5. Use words and context clues in the question to help you figure out d

I learned Spanish grammar in middle school and high school and have never forgotten it. I have traveled in Mexico, Latin America, Spain, and all parts of Southern California, where I have improved my fluency. I taught ESL to Spanish speakers and thereby became more fluent as I learned from my students. I learned teaching skills in my ESL experience and apply those skills to teaching Spanish.
Spelling

Spelling

In part because I read a lot, I have always been a good speller. I don't use spellcheck when I write. I've improved on being a good speller by reading a lot and looking up words I come across in order to confirm the spelling. There are certain rules and techniques to learn that will help one learn to spell better. If a student reads a lot and can write what he/she hears (dictation; it takes practice), it will lead to mastery of spelling.

I learned study skills in college through trial and error (mostly error) and went on to earn my degree. I applied my knowledge to teaching the study skills to my students. I teach by guiding students to devise a checklist that works for them.

I am an avid tennis player, having taken tennis lessons at a young age, and played competitive tennis throughout most of my life. Now I play tennis for fun but am a student of the game as I try to improve. I am patient, observant, and I can teach by drills and by diagnosing weaknesses and strengths.

The Best Tutor my son

My son passed the GED test on 2nd try. Gregory made it all possible. After the 1st meeting for about an hour my son felt very comfortable with him. I hired previous tutors but none of them is as good as Gregory. He knows the material, what to teach, & makes it so simple so the student can learn effectively. After the second meeting we spent another hour my son tells me that he's ready for the test & he's very confident that he'll pass, then I registered him. We met with Gregory again for 3rd & last for a review. I only paid 3 total hours of tutoring that cost $105 total. When we results came I was very, very excited that my son passed the test. I wished we would have met Gregory before my son taken the test the first time he would have passed. Gregory is the best, he's an angel & very nice. I'm planning to enroll my son to college & in in case he needs tutoring I wouldn't hesitate to contact Gregory. Thank you very much.
