About Mark

Bio

I spent 17 years as a humanities professor at a small college in the Midwest before relocating to NC. My specialty is religion and theology, but I taught general humanities courses that included the "Great Books", ethics, world history, literature, and philosophy. Nearly all of my classes contained substantive instruction in writing and critical thinking. I received the college-wide teaching award, and my course evaluations were consistently excellent.

I have a doctorate in theological ethics and a Masters of Divinity degree. I graduated from Hampden-Sydney College magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and I was a tutor in the writing lab for three years. I won the college's writing award, as well as first prize in a regional fiction contest. I worked in publishing and public relations before attending graduate school, and I have extensive experience as a writer, editor, and proofreader. I also have worked with high school students in various capacities.

As a professor at a small college, I taught mainly discussion-based courses with some lecturing. One of my favorite parts of teaching, however, was time with individual students and small groups during office hours. During these times, I essentially tutored students for course content and especially writing. I purposely pursued a position that valued teaching over research, and I have great relationships with my former students.

Regularly taught college courses in New Testament and Old Testament, as well as theology courses that included significant biblical engagement. Able to teach in both secular and faith-based contexts. My education required some proficiency in Greek and Hebrew.
Grammar

Grammar

I began editing, proofreading, and tutoring writing during college. Before graduate school, I worked in publishing and public relations, which included a good deal of editing and proofreading work. I worked my way through graduate school as an editor and proofreader, and I taught grammar at the college level for many years.
Religion

Religion

I taught college courses in theology, ethics, Bible, and religious history. I taught specialty ethics courses in international relations, medical ethics, business ethics, and sexual ethics. I also regularly taught a course on Islam, and I have expertise in Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations. Many of my courses dealt with the intersections between religion and literature.
World History

World History

To get advanced degrees in religion, I was required to learn and extensive amount of world history. With a colleague, I co-created a Western Traditions course to teaching Western civilization through engagement with important primary texts from Homer on.
