Hi, I'm Alyssa! I am a former third grade teacher and I LOVE teaching elementary school age children! I graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor's in Elementary Education. I taught for two years before stepping away to pursue another career. In addition to teaching North Carolina curriculum, I prepared my students for End of Grade testing and most performed very well. It is exciting to me when I'm working with a student and something finally "clicks". That lightbulb moment is why I love being teaching!

Though I'm no longer in the classroom I still have a passion for helping students succeed! I truly enjoy helping a student build confidence in their ability to succeed. I believe in meeting students where they're at and taking them as far as they can go. I am currently tutoring a first grader in reading and writing and I am comfortable tutoring in all elementary subject areas.

I am familiar with Common Core and different methods of problem solving. I encourage conceptual understanding and not just learning an algorithm. I like to get students talking about math so they can explain "why" they solved a problem a certain way.

Science is fun! I truly believe that and like to make Science as enjoyable as possible. I have experience integrating science with math and language arts also since everything is interconnected.

I love to read and write and I believe that enthusiasm comes across to my students. I know the Common Core standards well and have taught for Read to Achieve and EOG test prep. I have helped struggling readers reach grade level proficiency and achieve greater levels of fluency and comprehension.
