Hello, I'm Casey! This past spring, I graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. I enjoyed my time at school, even though it was challenging, and I am grateful to the professors who took the time to ensure we understood the core concepts we were learning and did not just prepare us for exams. Due to my professors, I was able to pass the FE Exam and the PE Exam, both in the environmental discipline, on the first attempt. My tutoring style is reflective of my favorite teachers by focusing on core concepts and their applications, then learning how to properly utilize test-taking strategies.
A typical lesson with me includes an interactive activity to review and assess current understanding, instruction on concepts and applications, practicing problems together, and students working through problems on their own. I always make adjustments to this structure based on the subject material and students’ needs. One of my main priorities is keeping the environment positive, making students feel safe to make mistakes and comfortable to voice when the material does not make sense to them. I verbally encourage them and work to grow their confidence throughout my time with them.
Within the last 8 years, I have accumulated various teaching and tutoring experiences. I began tutoring in high school by assisting my math teacher with students who needed extra assistance, and I also helped run STEM programs as a volunteer at my local library. In college, I worked at an after-school center where I taught math and English classes with 5 to 12 students ages 3 to 14. Along with this, I participated in study groups at school, assisting others in understanding subjects like hydraulics and hydrology. I eventually left the after-school center and began private tutoring, working primarily with middle and high school students one-on-one. I have tutored students specifically with exam performance in mind and students with goals of increasing academic abilities and performance.
