I recently graduated summa cum laude (3.92 GPA) from Furman University with a B.S. in biology on the cell and molecular track. I earned A's in all of my biology courses and excelled at cell biology and genetics. I recently graduated summa cum laude (3.92 GPA) from Furman University with a B.S. in biology on the cell and molecular track. I earned A's in all of my biology courses and excelled at cell biology and genetics. I was the 2020-2021 recipient of Furman’s Nora Mullens Biology Award, and I am inducted into the Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious college honor society. Regarding writing and proofreading, college professors across disciplines have said I am extremely well-written. I got 100% in my general writing course at Furman, 5’s on my AP English Language & Comp. and AP English Literature & Comp. exams, and a 770 on SAT R&W. I also got a 780 on SAT Math, and I’ve just reviewed the course on Khan Academy to ensure my math is fresh.

I currently only have professional tutoring experience with some local AP biology students. However, I’ve informally tutored my peers throughout HS and college, covering topics including SAT math, cell biology, genetics, and genomics and bioinformatics. Other students frequently approached me with questions, asked me for notes, and trusted me with final reviews of group projects.

My main tutoring approach is working with a student’s preferred learning methods. During our sessions, we could focus on reviewing and organizing notes, solving practice problems, or creating diagrams, flashcards, or study games (e.g. PurposeGames). I’ve also found it effective to look over a student’s relevant notes prior to a session. This allows me to better assess their understanding, and I also frequently catch and correct small errors. For instance, one student wrote that a protein was “activated” instead of “inactivated”, which became an underlying source of confusion. Lastly, I think it is important to make learning engaging through real-world applications, gamification, and an enthusiastic tutor. I hope that I can share my love of learning with you or your student!

SAT Math

I scored 780/800 on the SAT math section, and I’ve just fully re-mastered the course on Khan Academy to ensure that all of the topics are fresh. I've always been great at math (I even got 100% in college calculus), but I won't make the cliché claim that I've always loved it. My ability comes from learning to think of math as a logical puzzle game. A high SAT score doesn't necessarily come from genius-level intellect, but rather from learning a small selection of patterns and rules (not quick "tricks" that don't convey overall understanding) and practicing them until they stick. If you can learn the notes of a song, the choreography of a dance, the lines of a script, the rules of a sport, or the strategies for a game, then I can likely help you improve your score on the SAT!
