Most of the kids I work with aren't "bad at math." Their class just moved too fast for them to keep up — that's what nearly every parent tells me. When that happens, small gaps pile up until math starts to feel impossible. What I do is find exactly where a student last had a real grip on the material, and we build from there — without leaving behind the important things they already know — until they're back on solid ground and keeping pace with their class again.
There is often (almost always) more than one way to solve a problem, so part of my job is figuring out which methods are academically and developmentally appropriate for a student based on their grade level, and then working on those strategies together. This almost always includes consistent reinforcement of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division facts based on grade level. Because it's one-on-one, I can meet a student exactly where they are and give them material that's both challenging and doable.
I also tutor reading and phonics, aimed mainly at the lower elementary levels — roughly K through 2nd or 3rd grade. My focus here is on phonics and digraphs — combinations of letters like sh, th, ph, and ch — in order to help students decode new words, along with using context clues to work out what those words mean.
I work with a mix of fiction and nonfiction during our reading time in order for our lessons line up with your child's reading program at school.
