I love helping writers find their voice and improve their style and grammar. I find equal joy in helping Spanish language students emerge from grammar confusion, learn how to study language, and find a route toward doing well in class — and even achieve conversational fluency.

My bona fides: I earned my BA at Yale University and an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of the South. I have taught Spanish at at The New School for Social Research, Einstein College of Medicine, Princeton Adult School, Columbia University's Chazen School of Business, IBM, and New York Medical College, among others. As a writer, I edited several published books and have published many articles, and original works o nonfiction and fiction. My literary translations from Spanish are in quality magazines as well as published books.

My pedagogy: Whatever subject I'm teaching, I'm sensitive to different learning styles and adapt my approach to the individual student. I prefer to work remotely and I am a Zen Master of platforms where we can work together dynamically during our sessions. My style is highly interactive.

What are my scheduling preferences? I prefer to schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings at a regular hour and for a minimum of four meetings scheduled in advance, except for the first lesson which is our chance to see if we are a good match as tutor and student. All classes are online and I offer a (free) fifteen-minute initial meeting to make sure our technology and vibe are working.

Tech requirements: A private room where you won't be interrupted, a fast internet connection, and headphones. Ear buds are fine.

Let's talk. I look forward to meeting you!

Grammar,

Grammar

Grammar is beautiful, and you can learn how to use it not only correctly, but to put more power into your writing. I am a devotee of Mignon Fogarty, and I love explaining to students why words and how we use them matter. Have a specific issue? Let's have a flash lesson online! Want to work more long-term? That's fine, too. I will review texts you have written, and offer exercises that I design to gently break you of bad habits, both in your speech and your writing. I know that grammar is the map, not the territory, but we have to learn them before we break them. Let me show you why grammar is beautiful!
Spanish

Spanish

With a BA from Yale and a Master's from the University of the South, I've taught Spanish language, grammar, and literature for a long time at the university level and I've seen every kind of learner. Most recently, I took a student from a possible failing grade to a B+ in his final. Oh yes, with the right help and encouragement, you can succeed! Lately, students are being asked to learn via online textbooks and it's not always (almost never?) a good fit. Let me give you some simple explanations with my own learning materials and help get you through that course and maybe even put the shine back on your enthusiasm for learning Spanish! Classes with me are interactive and fun. Don't worry: call me!

Hello! I won my BA in Language and Literature from Yale University and have a Masters in Creative Writing from The University of the South. I help aspiring writers express themselves more powerfully and effectively. What does your writing need? I will be your gentle critic and ally, spotting weaknesses in sentences, essay structure, thesis development, and vocabulary use. We will focus on reading others and our own work as writers, employing rhetorical techniques, what makes sentences clear and beautiful, and understanding literary terminology. Are you a corporate writer? Let's see how to pare down your style for effective communication. Writing is the way we form ideas, convey ideas and convince other people our ideas are engaging and good. Let's see what we can do together to sharpen your pen.

Writing

My work with writers focuses on process, grammar, structure, vocabulary enhancement, and style. Young students (9th grade and up): Prep for AP English by learning the parts of speech, important vocabulary (taken directly from the pages of the AP test), and the important ideas of rhetoric, constructing an argumentative essay, terms used in literary analysis, and reviewing common grammar errors. Practice until writing an essay is no longer something you dread! Find your voice. Adult students: As a published writer, editor, and literary translator, I know what it takes to make your text publication-ready. I also work with corporate execs who need to improve their writing for clarity and style.

Tutor responded:

Oh, Dee-jay, thank you so much. I always want to meet my students where they are and show them that they CAN do it! You're writing college level essay in your second language! Consider yourself a genius. And let me know how it goes with that paper. Bravo!

Dorothy is one of the best tutors you will ever work with! I'm so grateful to have found her.

Dorothy saved me during an intense grammar and English class! She was able to break down each step of my classwork and make every problem seem easy. She was 100% invested in my success as a student. Dorothy has a great personality and a sharp set of eyes which made our sessions fun and productive. She is caring and patient and I never felt intimidated to ask dozens of questions. I really liked the method used to spark my conversation.

Thanks for the rules regarding what to do and not to do. I really enjoyed the practice and discourse review.

Excellent; Highly Recommended

My son has worked with Dorothy for the past two school years. She is excellent and I would highly recommend her. She probes, (sometimes cajoles) and truly teaches. He leaves each lesson with not just how to do a particular assignment, but rather with something much more important- how to further his thinking. She is always prepared and takes an interest in his development.

Tutor responded:

Thank you very much, Andy! I hope that he is loving his first semester at MIT! Kind regards,

Fabulous Tutor!
