About Dorothy

I am a full-time teacher and writer. I am an adjunct professor of Spanish at The New School for Social Research (NYC), and have taught Spanish at the Chazen School of Business, Yeshiva University, and New York Medical College. I am a writing coach, and have edited several book and and many articles and publications. I earned my BA at Yale University and I am a 4th year MFA student in Creative Writing at the University of the South.

Spanish Language: I wrote my own book on beginning Spanish grammar for medical students at Einstein College of Medicine, and for many years I was a Spanish language curriculum developer at Manhattan's Latin American Workshop language school. I bring life to my Spanish classes with music, poetry and art. I prepare personalized online study tools for my students, including "talking" flash cards, animated power points, and exercises tailored to the student's needs.

I have taught at a number of corporations, including IBM, General Motors, and Trinity Investments. Besides AP Spanish, my specialty subjects include Spanish for Travelers, Medical Spanish, Business Spanish, Legal Spanish, Spanish for Medical Personnel and Spanish for Social Workers. I teach a lot of adults, but I also tutor high school students on a private basis, helping them to refine their essay writing skills, and I have a strong background in AP Spanish test prep. I am open to exception, but I usually do not teach students younger than 15 years of age.

Writing and Language Arts: I am a freelance writer and editor. I teach grammar, punctuation, and writing and reading comprehension skills to students 15 and older. I have worked for a number of magazines in my career, including Sports Illustrated, Time International, The Westchester Wedding Planner and Interview magazine. I help my students conceptualize and shape their writing work, develop their creative instincts and learn the fundamentals of standard written English. I have edited books by Fortune 500 executives, and work as a communication coach for executives, helping them learn how to write effective memos, reports and presentation. I am sensitive to the fact that different people have different learning styles and I adapt my approach to the individual student.

I prefer to schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings at a regular hour and for a minimum of four meetings scheduled in advance, except for the first lesson which is our chance to see if we are a good match as tutor and student.

I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in Language and Literature from Yale University and I am an MFA candidate in writing at The University of the South. I reside in Durham, NC.

I help aspiring writers, both adults or young students, become more powerful, expressive and thoughtful in their work. I focus on process, grammar, structure, vocabulary enhancement and style. I teach parts of speech, vocabulary acquisition, reading for comprehension, rhetorical technique, writing the analytical essay, understanding literary terminology, and sentence structure. I also give feedback to students involved in the college admission essay process.

I focus on ways to approach a writing assignment, warm-up exercises, how to come up with a good idea, creating a solid thesis statement, and expressing ideas in ways that convey the author's personality are engaging.

Work with me involves dedication to doing assignments and keeping a writing journal. My goal is to help the student become a stronger writer through guided practice, becoming a careful reader, and engaging in literary dialogue.

Grammar

Grammar is beautiful! And sadly, most schools no longer teach the subject. I love grammar and love explaining to students what the parts of speech are and how they combine is careful, balanced ways to enhance their written work and make it clearer and more beautiful.

Practically, I will review students' work with them, offer exercises that I design and work to gently break them of bad habits, both in their speech and their writing.

I know that grammar is the map, not the territory: That said, without learning the rules first, we are not as writers welcome to break them willy nilly!

Songwriting

You know you have a hit songwriter inside, but you can't put anything together than sounds convincing? Want to write a song for a special someone? I am here to help!

It's not all about waiting for The Muse (although having a muse helps!): There are techniques that can be employed to make a mediocre song good to great, and I can teach you those techniques: Choice of topic, song structure, prosody, imagery, staying on theme and more are elements that have to be part of a great song.

My experience: I am a professional musician and songwriter who has toured the world with her music and produced two CDs. I have written songs commissioned by the nonprofit organization Songs of Love, am a member of ASCAP, and have works with music publishers and libraries.

Call me and let's talk about how to develop your artist inside.

Spanish

I have been teaching adults and teens Spanish for 24 years. I love the elegance of Spanish grammar, and teach it with my own materials, combining into the curriculum a focus on material the student is studying in school or the adult requires for his or her language goal, whether that goal is professional or personal.

I have my BA in Language and Literature from Yale University. I have a strong background in Latin American literature and poetry, and enjoy working with AP and advanced student on analysis and discussing of the great works.

My method for Beginners is comparative. I find that a well-organized and direct explanation of a concept in English helps us "cut to the chase" quickly and leaves us time to do more practice in Spanish only.

Writing

My work with aspiring writers, be they adults or young students, focuses on process, grammar , structure, vocabulary enhancement and style. I help young students prepare for AP English by learning the parts of speech, important vocabulary (taken directly from the pages of the AP test), and the important ideas of rhetoric, constructing an argumentative essay, terms used in literary analysis, and reviewing common grammar errors.

The most interesting and often difficult task to tackle is writing process and style. Here, I focus on ways to approach a writing assignments, warm-up exercises, how to come up with a good idea, a solid thesis statement, and how to express ideas in a powerful way that conveys the author's personality and is engaging for the reader.

Work with me involves dedication to doing assignments and keeping a writer's notebook. While I will focus on current assignments with student, I do not see my role as an editor of essays. My goal is to help the student become a stronger writer through guided practice.
