About Dorothy

I am a full-time teacher and writer. Former adjunct professor of Spanish at The New School for Social Research, Einstein College of Medicine, and Princeton Adult School, I have also taught Spanish at Columbia University's Chazen School of Business, IBM, and New York Medical College. As a writer and editor, I have edited several books (including Spanish 1-4 for Berlitz International) and I've written many articles, blog posts, and works of both nonfiction and fiction. I earned my BA at Yale University and I am in my thesis year for my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of the South.

Spanish Language: I wrote my own book on beginning Spanish grammar for medical students at Einstein College of Medicine, and for many years I was a Spanish language curriculum developer at Manhattan's Latin American Workshop language school. I bring life to my Spanish classes with music, poetry and art. I prepare personalized online study tools for my students, including "talking" flash cards, animated power points, and exercises tailored to the student's needs. I prefer to work with mature students.

I have taught at a number of corporations, including IBM, General Motors, Brooklyn Legal Services, and Trinity Investments. Besides AP Spanish, my specialty subjects include Spanish for Travelers, Medical Spanish, Business Spanish, Legal Spanish, Spanish for Medical Personnel and Spanish for Social Workers. I do not teach students younger below high school age.

Writing and Language Arts: I am a freelance writer and editor, and can send writing samples on request. I teach grammar, punctuation, and writing and reading comprehension skills to students 15 to adult. I have worked for a number of magazines in my career, including Sports Illustrated, Time International, The Westchester Wedding Planner and Interview magazine. I help my students conceptualize and shape their writing, understand essay and story structure, and develop their creative instincts. I have edited books by Fortune 500 executives, and work as a corporate communication coach for adults in business who want to learn how to write effective memos, reports and presentation.

I am sensitive to the fact that different people have different learning styles and I adapt my approach to the individual student.

I prefer to schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings at a regular hour and for a minimum of four meetings scheduled in advance, except for the first lesson which is our chance to see if we are a good match as tutor and student. All classes are online, and require a (free) fifteen minute set up meeting to make sure our technology is working. For online classes, a private room where you won't be interrupted, a fast internet connection, and headphones (preferably with built-in mic) are required.

Let's talk. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Hello! I won my BA in Language and Literature from Yale University and I am in the thesis year of my Masters in Creative Writing from The University of the South.

I help aspiring writers express themselves more powerfully and effectively. What does your writing need? I will be your critic and ally, spotting weakness in sentence and essay structure, thesis development, and vocabulary use. Let's focus on reading like writers, employing rhetorical techniques, understanding literary terminology. Are you a corporate writer? Let's see how to pare down your style for effective memos, reports and performance reviews.

Writing is the way we form ideas, convey ideas and convince other people our ideas are engaging and good. Let's see what we can do together to sharpen your pen.

Grammar

Grammar is beautiful, and you can learn how to use it not only correctly, but to put more power into your writing. I am a devotee of Mignon Fogarty, and I love explaining to students why words and how we use them matter. Have a specific issue? Let's have a flash lesson online! Want to work more long-term? That's fine, too. I will review texts you have written, and offer exercises that I design to gently break you of bad habits, both in your speech and your writing.

I know that grammar is the map, not the territory, but we have to learn them before we break them. Let me show you why grammar is beautiful!

Spanish

I have a BA in Foreign Languages from Yale University, and am a candidate for a MFA in Creative writing (2018) at The University of the South. I have taught Spanish language, grammar and literature, for 24 years, 17 of those at the University level. Specialties include A=College Spanish Levels 1 though 4, and Spanish for professional applications (Medical, Education, Fine Arts). Learn Spanish and expand your mind!

Writing

My work with aspiring writers, be they adults or young students, focuses on process, grammar , structure, vocabulary enhancement and style. I help young students prepare for AP English by learning the parts of speech, important vocabulary (taken directly from the pages of the AP test), and the important ideas of rhetoric, constructing an argumentative essay, terms used in literary analysis, and reviewing common grammar errors.

The most interesting and often difficult task to tackle is writing process and style. Here, I focus on ways to approach a writing assignments, warm-up exercises, how to come up with a good idea, a solid thesis statement, and how to express ideas in a powerful way that conveys the author's personality and is engaging for the reader.

Work with me involves dedication to doing assignments and keeping a writer's notebook. While I will focus on current assignments with student, I do not see my role as an editor of essays. My goal is to help the student become a stronger writer through guided practice.
