I have a BS degree in Mathematics and a minor in computer science from High Point University and graduated with honors (Summa Cum Laude). I am a licensed secondary education math teacher. I have 15+ years teaching and tutoring experience.

Subjects I have taught at the high school level include: Alg. 1 (Math I), Alg. 2 (Math III) , Advanced Functions and Modeling, and year long Algebra for students that struggle. I also teach Computer Programming (Intro - AP level). Other areas that I will help students when needed are: English, Science, Study Skills and with Test-Taking Strategies. I tutor students at all age/grade levels.

I know the importance of adapting my teaching to the learning style of each person to promote their confidence and success! I also have several years of experience applying math to real world situations which I use as often as possible! I have experience and success helping gifted math students, students struggling to pass math, and those in between. :-)

My students gain much more than simply increasing their GPA! They gain a better understanding of math and their study skills improve. All of these successes put together will help them in college, their future jobs or just life in general! Through perseverance and success, their self-confidence increases and stress levels and test anxiety lessen. My students are a blessing and discover very quickly that I am here to help them succeed!

Depending on the distance, I can either travel to your home or a mutually convenient public location, such as a library or book store.

I have co-taught w/ an EC teacher in these classes so that we can team up, help each other and better meet the needs of these students. Tutor responded:

Thank you Lori for your review! I have loved working with your daughter and helping her this year! She is very easy to work with and good at asking for additional help when needed. I have seen her gain a great deal of confidence in her math ability since we began! :-)

Flexible, patient, and knowledgeable

Amy worked with my son when he was struggling with Algebra 2. While being very advanced in math when younger, he fell behind in learning during the pandemic and was on the verge of failing this year. With Amy's support, he improved his grade tremendously from quarter 1 to quarter 2 and passed math. He really enjoyed working with her and appreciated that she would make sure he understood concepts. He also appreciated that he was able to give him more than one method of doing something to better match his learning style. I found her very flexible and a good communicator in scheduling. While he's excited to get a break this semester from math, we'll definitely look forward to working with Amy again next year.

Caroline, 50 lessons with Amy
Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for such a kind and thorough review! He was such a joy to work with! I appreciated how well he communicated to me when something just "wasn't clicking". I always stress this to students, because then I am able to regroup and show them a different strategy or method that makes more sense to them. :-) It is very typical for me to adjust my methods to match the learning styles of each student and one of the reasons I enjoy working individually with students!! I get so excited when they reach that "aha" moment and are happy about their success! I look forward to working with him in the future! Tell him to have a great summer and I'll see him soon. :-)

Excellent with 8 year old grandson

Great connection to student

Amy tutored my daughter for an upcoming ACT math test. She was patient and made sure that my daughter truly understood how to complete the problems she struggled with. Amy taught my daughter time-saving techniques to improve her pace. Her communication skills are especially good—she not only cared about how my daughter did on the ACT, but also about how she was coping with the challenges of everyday life during the pandemic. I highly recommend her tutoring services.

Christine, 11 lessons with Amy
Tutor responded:

It was such a joy to work with Penny!! She was very attentive and eager to learn all of the strategies and shortcuts that I taught her. She became much more confident in her abilities once we went over the areas she struggled with the most. :-) She did so much better on the 2nd practice test after several sessions with me and independent practice! With continued practice on her own using resources that I shared with her, I have no doubt she will obtain her desired score!! :-)

Knowledge and Helpful Tutor

Amy did a great job helping me with Business Calculus. When she started tutoring me, I was worried that I wasn't going to pass the class but with her valuable tutoring sessions, I made a B! I couldn't have done this without her assistance. She is able to teach math in a way that is easy to understand and I highly recommend her services.

Gavin, 6 lessons with Amy

Gavin, it was my pleasure helping you! It is always refreshing when I'm able to see students gain confidence with their math skills/ability and especially see it reflected in their numeric grade. ;-). Thank you for the awesome review!

Amy has been so VERY HELPFUL to me as I prepare for the ACT!

After sharing my latest score with Amy, she was able to pinpoint areas that I needed improvement and helped me to focus on these areas first, in order to raise my score. She is very helpful and explains problems in a way that is easy to learn. She also gives strategies for the ACT test that have proved helpful to me. I would recommend her to anyone needing help!
