I hold a PhD in Computer Science and MS degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics. As a university professor and lecturer, I have taught several courses in computer science, computer programming, web development, and mathematics at the university level for more than 15 years. I continue to apply my experience and skills in online tutoring environments.

My web development courses have involved basic web design (HTML, CSS), client-side web programming (JavaScript), and server-side web programming (PHP, SQL). Programming languages I have taught include Java, C++, Visual Basic, and AppInventor. Java is the programming language with which I have the most experience. I continue to learn new topics, programming languages, and web technologies to widen the array of subjects I am able to teach. I enjoy writing a program or designing a webpage and then watching it come to life.

While not actively tutoring in these subjects, my background also includes advanced topics in computer science such as data structures, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and graphical user interface design, as well as software such as MS Excel and MS Access.

Mathematics courses that I have taught include discrete math, algebra, and pre-calculus. As a student, I have taken a number of advanced discrete math courses, achieving high grades in all of them. Discrete math is my favorite area of mathematics and I especially enjoy the counting problems.

My experience also includes working as a graduate teaching assistant in both Computer Science and Mathematics. These experiences were very enjoyable for me. I earned an Outstanding Teaching Assistant award in Computer Science at both the University of Tennessee and the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

My teaching methods involve detailed step-by-step explanations, working through examples, and live coding and problem solving. I am also skilled in tracking down errors in student programs, as well as suggesting ways to improve coding style and organization. The teaching settings in which I

CSS,

CSS

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several web development courses at universities. One of my web development courses involved basic web design with HTML and CSS. The course also included lessons on good web design principles and how to design a website that is appealing and user-friendly. I included a discussion about the concepts of CSS and its advantages over inline styles in the HTML. Students designed a small website as a final project, where they were required to follow good design and use style sheets in CSS throughout their website. I also taught a more advanced course in client-side web programming which involved more advanced CSS techniques, such as animations and drop-down menus.
HTML,

HTML

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several web development courses at universities. One of my web development courses involved basic web design with HTML and CSS. Students designed a small website as a final project. I have mastered the use of basic HTML tags, such as links, images, and lists, as well as more complex web page elements, such as tables and forms. I have over 20 years of HTML experience, including teaching classes, coding my personal website, and working on larger-scale websites. I enjoy designing and coding a webpage and then watching it come to life.
Java,

Java

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several computer programming courses at universities. My strongest programming language is Java. My teaching experience includes both introductory and advanced Java courses taught multiple times. I have mastered the basic concepts, such as if-else, loops, and arrays, and I am also familiar with more advanced concepts, such as string methods, inheritance, and GUIs. I especially enjoy teaching how to program GUI applications. I also have experience with programming Java in an Eclipse environment.
JavaScript,

JavaScript

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several web development courses at universities. One of my web development courses was a course in client-side web programming with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. More than half the course focused on JavaScript. It started with students programming several basic JavaScript programs (using loops, arrays, strings, etc.), and later writing JavaScript programs involving user input validation, event handling, and even creating a drawing program. I have also done some volunteer web programming for relatively large websites; one being educational, and another being database-driven.
PHP,

PHP

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several web development courses at universities. One of my web development courses was a course in server-side web programming with PHP and SQL. More than half the course focused on PHP. It started with students programming several basic PHP programs (using arrays, strings, etc.), and later writing PHP scripts to interact with a database and display results on a webpage. Students were required to implement a hotel reservation system (involving a database) as part of the homework exercises. I have also done some volunteer web programming for relatively large websites; one being educational, and another being database-driven. Both involved writing PHP code to query a database and display results on a webpage in an organized manner.

Web Design

I have taught or been a teaching assistant for several web development courses at universities. My web development courses have involved everything from basic web design (HTML, CSS) to client-side web programming (Javascript) to server-side web programming (PHP, SQL). Students designed a small website as a final project, and also programmed several scripts as homework exercises. Also included in my basic web design course is a lesson on good web design principles and how to design a website that is user-friendly. I have also done some volunteer web programming for relatively large websites; one being educational, and another being database-driven. I enjoy designing a webpage and then watching it come to life.

Knowledgeable and patient

I needed to add comments to the code that I did with another tutor. Having no previous computer class she was very patient and helped me understand what every line means and why it’s written that way so I can understand better. As she was helping me with comments I was impressed with how she can see very little mistakes like spelling in my code. She is very detailed. She pays close attention to some details. I’ve been working with another tutor and going forward I would like to have her as my main tutor.

Kristy knows her stuff! She is great!

Kristy was prompt and ready to go for each session! She explained everything making it easy to follow along. I felt that I was able to better understand the application of why she was doing by the way she presented the information. She is patient and has a sense of humor! She likes blue apples (insider)! Lol! Thank you Kristy for two wonderful sessions. We received A grades on the project we were working on!!!
