About Joshua

Bio

I went to Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan to study Japanese law and politics. I currently go to UNCC to get a certificate in translation for Japanese. I am expected to graduate spring of 2018. I've been studying Japanese now for about 15 years. I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia. When I lived in Japan I studied martial arts: kendo and Iaido. I have had experience teaching other people Japanese and Iaido and I loved the experience of teaching.

I lived in Kyoto, Japan. I went to Doshisha University in Japan. I have been speaking Japanese for 15 years. I studied Iaido at Doshisha University (the best university for Iaido in Japan) and I am soon to be a 2. I am interested in teaching those who are new or those who want to try it. I know a lot about Japanese culture and I like to celebrate Japanese holidays. An example of a holiday that I celebrate is the Bon festival. This festival is also held in Charlotte every summer. The real festival may be much better in Japan, especially Kyoto, but I think Charlotte is a good American representation of Obon.

Martial Arts

I went to Doshisha University and was apart of the iaido club there. I became a 1 dan but soon I will be a 2 dan. Doshisha University is said to be the best university for Iaido in Japan. I study the Muso- Jikken Eishin Ryu. I know all the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei katas in Iaido. I have competed in numerous tournaments in Japan, and I, along with my club, got to learn from the masters in Kocchi Shikoku for a week. Kocchi is the place where Eishin Ryu originated from. In Kendo, I have done kendo for about 13 years and I am a 3 dan. I am interested in teaching iaido and kendo basics to those who are new and to those who want to try it before joining a dojo.

Fun Teacher

He was fun, and didn't feel like a teacher. Almost immediately he felt more like a friend. Not to mention the lesson seemed to go by so fast. I don't want to disappoint him, not saying I'll be perfect, but something about him makes me want to try harder.

An excellent tutor. He knows his stuff and is super patient

Appreciate how he not only teaches the language but weaves in Japanese history and culture into his lessons. We are working on sentence structure now! Focusing on the use of particles.
