If math isn't your superpower, no problem! I can make it less scary for you. I have taught or tutored everything from basic arithmetic to upper-division engineering math, as well as statistics. I have helped hundreds of people by listening to them, understanding their approach to math, and then showing them where to make adjustments. I do best with college-age and adult learners, but I also tutor high school students. I am currently available for tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays, late afternoons and evenings! I can work online, or in-person in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

My specialties are elementary statistics, calculus, and applied math for engineering including differential equations, stochastic processes, and linear algebra. I have a Bachelor's in Math, Master's in applied math, and Ph.D. in engineering math via Electrical Engineering (at the University of California at Santa Barbara). I logged over 2500 hours' time in one-on-one tutoring through Pearson Tutor Services, and worked four years as an adjunct professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

Before working with Pearson, I was an aerospace engineer, designing navigational software for the Air Force's C-17 transport plane as well as GPS-aided space navigation. I have over ten years' experience in the classroom at both the university level (Washington U in St. Louis, UC Santa Barbara, Wentworth) and the community college level (Santa Barbara City College, North Shore Community College in Lynn, MA). I had several clients for one-on-one tutoring in the home, at libraries, or at schools in Santa Barbara, CA, where I helped with GED math, college prep math, and college statistics.

I'd love to hear from you ... early on in your math or stats course, rather than later!

An excellent listener who will personalize your tutoring session to your needs. With over twenty years' experience in teaching math, I can give clear and simple explanations to even the most complex problems.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have experience in using Algebra 2 concepts in real life, as well as extensive experience in teaching Algebra 2 (among other math subjects). I can explain functions and graphing. I am comfortable explaining trigonometry using either a right-triangle or a unit-circle approach. My Ph.D. dissertation involved a lot of matrix algebra, so I can easily explain anything that has to do with matrices or determinants. I am also proficient in using Texas Instruments graphing calculators, and can help you learn to use the calculator (if needed) as well as to solve problems using the calculator. I look forward to hearing from you!

Do you need a Math Whisperer? Then call me. Whatever level of understanding you have, I will meet you there and we will go forward together. With over a decade's experience teaching higher mathematics, I can give simple explanations to even the most complicated subjects. That includes Calculus!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have extensive tutoring experience in precalculus. I will be happy to help you with any of the following: - trigonometry (either right triangle or unit circle approach) - functions and graphs - analytic geometry, including equations for circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas - limits - sequences and series - rates of change I will probably begin by asking you to tell me what you already know and how you have been approaching your math homework; then I can work with you in a way that respects your learning style and your needs. I also have a reputation for being able to work with even the most frustrated students -- just in case you fit that description. I am proficient with Texas Instruments graphing calculators, so if that is part of your curriculum, I can help you out there too. I look forward to hearing from you!

Linear Algebra

I have professional experience in using linear algebra and matrix methods to solve problems in aerospace engineering -- specifically, problems in aircraft and spacecraft navigation. My Ph.D. dissertation involved quadratic forms and eigenvalue-based methods of analyzing interactions between the different components in a model. I also taught a course in applied linear algebra for engineers that included matrix algebra, eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis, vector spaces, and least-squares methods. I am very familiar with: linear systems of equations, matrix algebra, determinants, vector spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, orthogonality, least-squares methods, symmetric matrices and quadratic forms, the geometry of vector spaces, Markov chains, and applications of linear algebra to optimization problems including but not limited to linear programming. I am the author, with I.B. Rhodes, of a matrix inequality theorem.

Great Tutor!

I needed to take College Algebra to finish my degree and sought Joan for help. I felt like a lost cause but after meeting Joan, I grew more confident. She really took the time to learn how I learn best and showed absolutely no judgement when I didn't know something very simple (which was quite often.) I was initially getting about a 60% average in the class and with much help from Joan, I got a 97% on the final exam and passed with the equivalent of a C+. I absolutely recommend Joan for anyone who needs help in college level math. She is patient, kind and eager to make sure you understand the subject matter. I hope this helps and good luck to those in search of help! It's tough, but Joan will get you through it!

Wonderful AP Statistics Tutor

Joan is helping tutor my high school daughter with AP Stats. She is wonderful to work with!! She makes it easy to schedule sessions and even helps out last minute when the stress gets high before a test. Joan is also a very patient and nurturing teacher who makes sure you really understand your lesson. I know that my daughter thinks very highly of her and will continue working with her throughout the school year.

Great Math Tutor!

Joan is a an excellent and encouraging math tutor. She is patient, easy to get a hold of and flexible with scheduling. I would recommend Joan as a tutor for anyone needing a refresher of basic mathematics skills or for those in need of more advanced, career-specified help in math, like myself. Joan's tutoring skills are helpful and she is a great confidence booster!

Great tutor, easy to connect with.

Joan is a great tutor. She helped with my statistics class at a point when I thought I was beyond help. She is patient and pleasant to work with and not only knows the material but she can teach it!. She is wonderful to work with and I would not only recommend her but I will use her again.

Tutor responded:

Thank you! It has been a pleasure to work with you as well.

Very helpful!

Joan was very helpful with my statistics assignments. We worked side by side and she was good at explaining how things worked in a simple and straightforward manner. She was very friendly and patient with me as we figured out the assignments and the little kinks in the R code system. Since she was unfamiliar with the R code statistical system and was finding her way with me initially, she took an hour off our total tutoring session, which was wonderful! She came on time, jumped right in to my assignments with me, and remained focused and extremely helpful for the entire three hours. I plan to meet with her again tomorrow. Joan is great and I would recommend her!
