I'm Aaron, and I'm your one-stop shop for expertise in various humanities fields and beyond. I hold a PhD from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, ThM and MDiv from Union Presbyterian Seminary, and BA from NC State University. I specialize in theology and ethics, and I also work in religion and science, analytic philosophy, and religion and popular culture.

Professionally, I conduct research through Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University, teach undergraduates at Brevard College, and work with folks of all ages through my congregational ministry at Lutheran Church of the Nativity near Asheville, NC. As the author or editor of several scholarly books, writer of 10 peer-reviewed journal articles, and presenter of 30+ papers to audiences across the US, UK, Canada, and Europe, I have an international reputation for academic excellence.

You can find my scholarly articles in publications like the Scottish Journal of Theology, International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, and Journal of Analytic Theology, among others, while my general audience writing appears in outlets like Earth & Altar Magazine and the Christian Century. Through all these efforts, I have proved myself as an skilled author, editor, and teacher time and again.

And now, I look forward to helping you hone your own skills and achieve excellence in your work too. If you need assistance developing, formatting, or proofing your writing, I’m here to help. If you want to advance your ability to read carefully, interpret charitably, or think logically, I’m your guy. If you want to become more confident as a speaker, debater, or any other sort of public communicator, I’ve got years of experience to bring to the table.

One of the things I love most about teaching and tutoring is helping students have “aha!” moments. I do this by cultivating highly dialogical environments in which we can pursue our common goal of learning. Both our voices matter when we’re striving for excellence together, so why not share yours with me now?

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

Mastering the skills needed for the ACT's English section is more than just knowing the right vocab or grammar rules. It's about being able to analyze texts, infer meaning from context clues, decipher details when they seem unclear, and more. Through both my master's degrees, PhD, and the extensive research that goes into my scholarly books, articles, and presentations, I've mastered these skills for myself. And through my work with high schoolers, undergraduates, and grad students alike, I've fine-tuned my ability to help you master them too.
ACT Reading

Mastering the skills needed for the ACT's Reading section is more than just knowing the right vocab or grammar rules. It's about being able to analyze texts and understand the words behind the words, the author's intentions, and even yourself as the reader. Through both my master's degrees, PhD, and the extensive research that goes into my scholarly books, articles, and presentations, I've mastered these skills for myself. And through my work with high schoolers, undergraduates, and grad students alike, I've fine-tuned my ability to help you master them too.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Through my teaching roles at the University of St Andrews and Brevard College, I have been regularly consulted by undergraduates and graduate students as they discern next steps on their educational journey. My assistance has contributed to admission at institutions like the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, the University of St Andrews, Union Presbyterian Seminary, the University of Aberdeen, and North Carolina State University. I have also helped various students decide whether their interests are best served by transferring to another institution and, if so, which ones might be ideal given their circumstances.
Legal Writing

Legal Writing

My current research involves various interaction with the philosophy of law, including consideration of common law and civil law approaches to jurisprudence, which has been increasingly cited by others in the development of their own work at the intersection of religion/theology and law. Additionally, my PhD focused on the interaction of theology with health law/policy in the US and UK, and I currently sit on a hospital ethics committee where we regularly consider matters of policy and relevant state/federal statutes (as well as case law).
LSAT

LSAT

Ever noticed that the LSAT mostly hinges on your mastery of logical and philosophical reasoning? Lucky for you, I'm an expert here. My PhD focused on the intersection of theology with health law/policy in the US and UK, and I am well-published in areas engaging exactly the sort of tools you'll need to ace the LSAT. I also conduct research in philosophy of law, including both common law and civil law approaches to jurisprudence.
Proofreading

Proofreading

In addition to the proofing required for my PhD dissertation, master's thesis, and scholarly/general audience writings, I have extensive experience editing the work of others to help make it as polished as possible. Among other things, this experience includes current service as both the founding co-editor of a book series with Cascade Books (Wipf & Stock) and a book review editor for the Journal of Biblical & Theological Studies.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Through my master's degrees, PhD studies, and onward to today I have given 30+ conference papers to audiences ranging from small to ballroom-sized groups in the US, UK, Canada, and Europe. I am also a regular preacher and have delivered sermons in three denominations between the US and UK over the last 8 years.
