Hello, I am Denys (students call me Dr. D)! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Biophysics, after which I earned a PhD degree in Theoretical Biophysics. During my postdoctoral training at University of Alabama Birmingham and at North Carolina State University, I had the privilege to mentor undergraduate and high school students. This is when I realized that I am passionate about teaching and supporting students to achieve their academic goals. My teaching philosophy is to be engaging, comprehensive, efficient and to employ real life experience to make the learning process both meaningful and enjoyable. I am willing to go the extra mile when my students need help or clarification. I use lesson plans in which first I introduce the topic in a creative way, then I teach the material. I am flexible in my approach to teaching and tutoring and make adjustments to the method to best fit the student’s individual needs.

During my 10+ years career as an educator, I had the opportunity of teaching and tutoring college and high school Geometry, Physics and Chemistry, SAT and ACT Math and Linux OS. I worked directly with students who needed assistance, but also in small group sessions. I addition, I offered tutoring sessions every day after school, where the students could come for homework help in Algebra, Geometry, Physics and Chemistry.

Students’ success is my goal and I welcome any suggestions or resources that parents or the students could provide. I am easy to reach and my response time is short. If you have questions or would like to schedule a lesson, don’t hesitate to contact me!

ACT Math

ACT Math

Can help with the ACT Math topics (since ACT Math is substantially closer to how they used to teach us back in Europe, vs for example SAT Math - that I happily teach and tutor too!). Will be happy to share with you any known to me useful rules, shortcuts and mnemonics, so that you honestly pass your ACT Math in the shortest possible time.
Geometry

Geometry

Taught and tutored HS Geometry (including Honors) for many years already, former scientist-biophysicist, got educated back in the day in what is now Ukraine. Can explain complicated topics comparably easily, will share test-taking tricks and shortcuts with an intelligent and motivated student.
Linux

Linux

Using GNU/Linux for work and home since 1998, grown up on Debian, learned to use CentOS and RHEL back in the day. Can help you to navigate the command line and to get feel at home under modern *nixes.
Macintosh

Macintosh

I am well familiar with the macOS' Aqua GUI and due to my knowledge of Linux, I'm pretty comfortable on the Terminal command line (despite the latter utilizing zsh and, generally, FreeBSD-derived userspace on its Darwin layer).
Physical Science

Physical Science

Biologist (Biophysics) with m/Chemistry.

Great Tutor

I am learning Linux and had some questions. I scheduled a tutoring session with Denys. Unfortunately, I was having technical issues with my computer just as the session started. Denys was very patient and actually helped me troubleshoot the problem. I was not expecting that. Denys has knowledge in many different areas of technology in addition to Linux. Once I was finally able to get computer working properly, Denys seamlessly navigated the Linux command line. He answered my questions and taught me a few new shortcuts that I did not know before. Because of the technical difficulties I had at the beginning of the session, Denys stayed on the line with me over the allotted hour. I would definitely book with him again if I am ever in need of a tutor.

Knowledgeable and Patient tutor

Denys helped me with a lot of Linux commands such as timedatectl, how to navigate vi, and ntp. He went further to teach me how to navigate my machine and other concepts such as memory and hard drives and also updated my VM machine. I am very grateful for his patience and ability to break down difficult material.
