Do you get bored with math and feel stumped on tests? I've tutored math for years, and even my students who had been labeled “slow learners” became some of the best students in their classes. My first calculus student, who had failed her first test, ended up becoming a math teacher!

I recently earned my credential to teach secondary mathematics. During the time I was an undergraduate college student, my professors requested that I join the math tutoring team, and I continued tutoring regularly for the next six years. I have been tutoring sporadically since then, and I am passionate about helping students improve in all academic subjects. I also tutor writing, grammar, and drawing. I have won awards for writing and art, and I have done editing for both academic and commercial publications.

Throughout my decades of tutoring, and in my professional and personal life, I have been fortunate to work with people with many neurodivergent labels, including gifted, ADHD, and ASD. I currently hold a certification as a clinical services provider for people with ADHD and will earn the same for ASD in May, 2025.
Algebra 1

I took algebra in 7th grade. I went on to major in math for two years in college, where I tutored discrete math, calc. I&II, linear algebra, differential equations, and statistics. Now, as a high school math teacher, I have taught Maths I, II, and III, in addition to AFM, precalculus, and Discrete mathematics, all of which are based on a strong algebraic foundation.

Beginning in 7th grade, I was placed with the honors mathematics students one grade level above mine. Having stayed on that track, I ended up tutoring pre-calculus to the honors-level seniors when I was in 10th grade. I then attended a boarding school for students interested in science and mathematics for the last two years of high school before I became a math major in college.

I have taught Math 8, Maths I, II, &III, and AFM in Guilford County Public Schools. I have taught in both Oakland, California and in North Carolina.
Geometry

Geometry

I took Euclidean Geometry long before the Common Core existed, and I teach it now in high school Common Core courses. Incidentally, I also love abstract geometry, where triangles don't have 180 degrees, and parallel lines don't exist!
Grammar

I had a rigorous grammar education beginning in the 6th grade when I took a college-level grammar class. I never missed a point for grammatical errors in college, and I have edited writing on both academic and professional levels. I feel a little sick to my stomach when someone does not use a possessive pronoun before a gerund.
Prealgebra

I have had great success tutoring middle, high school, and college students in all levels of algebra. Working with variables is often very confusing. I can help students understand not only why we have algebra but also how to work with variables.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I love conic sections, rational numbers, and trigonometry! I taught honors pre-calculus in Guilford County Schools in the '16-'17 school year, and I've tutored it much longer.
Public Speaking

I began speaking in front of crowds when I was in elementary school. I continued training for and speaking in competitions in middle school, and I have spoken to a wide variety of audiences since. When I took public speaking in college, my professor had me tutor my classmates and requested that I join the debate team. Most recently, I taught public speaking to middle school students.
Reading

Reading

I used to teach 7th grade English and Language Arts, so I taught all about the elements of reading, writing, and literature. Most recently, in my teacher credentialing program, I took two classes related to literacy development. One class was related to the development of literacy practices in my content area, including assessments and tailored interventions for specific difficulties that students might encounter. The second class dealt more with strategies for whole groups. While taking classes, I worked (under the advisement of a literacy pedagogy professor) with a local homeless child on developing her own set of decoding skills so that she could enter kindergarten this fall.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

In the 2016-2017 school year, I taught Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Discrete Math, and Advanced Functions and Modeling. Trigonometry is part of all these classes. In pre-calculus, it actually comprises three whole units! Trig models everything that rotates or travels in a wave! Trigonometry is awesome in its elegance, and it's fun to study!
Writing

Writing

In grade school, I won state, national, and international awards for writing. Since then, I have tutored writing and been published in a scholarly journal. In a more recent, professional capacity, I have written several grants with great success.
