I've been a classroom teacher by profession for the last 6 1/2 years, in middle school thru college, with experience tutoring and teaching piano on and off for the past 20 years. I've been a classroom teacher by profession for the last 6 1/2 years, in middle school thru college, with experience tutoring and teaching piano on and off for the past 20 years. I have a PhD in medieval philosophy/ethics and and love helping people of all grade levels learn across a variety of academic subjects (and in piano too!). My interests range from math, writing and grammar (sentence diagramming, anyone?) and languages (basic French and early-advanced Latin) to standardized test prep (SAT/ACT/GRE), philosophy, theology, to piano. Having connected with students who struggle with learning disabilities, who are academically advanced, or both, I strongly encourage independence and personal confidence in students. A classically-trained pianist, I also ran a private piano studio for 3 years, with a strong focus on technique. I enjoy volunteering on a small, regenerative farm, baking with sourdough, boxing, listening to audiobooks (some favorites are Tolstoy and Tolkien), and spending time with my four nephews and nieces in town, all under 8 years old.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

As a former college professor (4+ years), high school philosophy teacher, 8th grade English teacher, with tutoring experience in SAT/ACT test prep and essay-writing, I've helped students improve their reasoning skills and reading comprehension through discussion and written examinations. I've evaluated hundreds of written submissions from students. I've enjoyed especially the one-on-one meetings when students have come for further guidance in the revision process. I also wrote a 300-page dissertation (replete with 1000+ footnotes following the Chicago Manual of Style!) and published an article in the scholarly journal Moreana in 2016.
ACT Math

ACT Math

As a former classroom teacher, I taught Geometry, Algebra II, and 1st semester PreCalc in a private high school in 2024-25, and 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) in 2025-26 in a charter school. I taught an SAT math test prep course in summer of 2012, and during 2012-2017 I variously tutored across ACT/SAT/GRE test prep.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I taught Geometry, Algebra II, and 1st semester PreCalc in a private high school classroom in 2024-25, and 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) in 2025-26 in a charter school. I have also tutored ACT/SAT math prep and college-level economics.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I taught Geometry, Algebra II, and 1st semester PreCalc in a private high school classroom in 2024-25, and 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) in 2025-26 in a charter school. I have also tutored ACT/SAT math prep and college-level economics.
French

French

- 1 year of intensive French tutoring experience, providing individualized instruction to a high-school student enrolled in French II and diagnosed with ADHD. - Adapted lessons and tutoring strategies to support attention, comprehension, and retention. - Near-fluent French reading proficiency, with strong ability to assist students with reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and written work.
Geometry

Geometry

As a former classroom teacher, I taught 1st semester Geometry, Algebra II, and 1st semester PreCalc in a private high school in 2024-25, and 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) in 2025-26 in a charter school. I taught an SAT math test prep course in summer of 2012, and during 2012-2017 I variously tutored across ACT/SAT/GRE test prep.
Grammar

Grammar

I'm a total grammar nerd, and I've taught and tutored grammar basics in a few languages over the past fifteen years. Last year in spring 2026, I taught a grammar-intensive 8th Grade ELA course. As a fluent reader and translator of medieval Latin, I taught basic Latin grammar in a private high school in 2023-24. I also tutored for a year in French (II) language and grammar. Sentence diagramming was one of my favorite parts of elementary and middle school !
Philosophy

Philosophy

I have a PhD in medieval philosophy with a focus on the ethics, epistemology, and anthropology of Thomas Aquinas. I also have a special interest in Plato and Aristotle in those areas. Between the years of 2020-25, I taught full-time as a college professor for 4 1/2 years in freshman/sophomore intro courses through upper-level major courses, and I also taught high school philosophy (ancient, medieval, and modern).
Piano

Piano

I am an advanced pianist with a strong theoretical background, and enjoy both classical and jazz/blues. I have played piano since the age of 5, and I have taught piano for four years. My lessons are technique intensive; unless one learns to play with a relaxed yet firm hand-arm-shoulder positioning, and makes use of one's body and arm weight to play with power, the resultant tension will prevent the movement of nimble, free fingers and limit the musicality with which one can play. I also emphasize training in music theory alongside the music itself. I prefer to use the Bastien series, although I am flexible and can supplement other piano methods as necessary.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

As a former classroom teacher, I taught Geometry, Algebra II, and 1st semester PreCalc in a private high school in 2024-25, and 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) in 2025-26 in a charter school. I taught an SAT math test prep course in summer of 2012, and during 2012-2017 I variously tutored across ACT/SAT/GRE test prep.

Study Skills

Study Skills

As a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy, I have had quite a number of years of schooling, in addition to my 7+ years of tutoring. I am also familiar with Stephen Covey's books on prioritizing and time management. With the tools gained from experience, from learning how to learn myself, I can help students organize their projects and assignments in a way that is realistic and healthy given their other commitments.
