Hi! I’m Sarah, a STEM educator and tutor with a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill. I love helping students take subjects that feel confusing or intimidating and break them down into something that actually makes sense.

I’ve been teaching and tutoring for more than 10 years and have worked with learners at just about every level, from middle and high school students to undergraduate and graduate students to working professionals. My experience includes one-on-one tutoring, college teaching, small-group mentoring, and interactive classes with more than 150 learners.

I specialize in Python, R, data science, statistics, biology, chemistry, and related STEM subjects. I especially enjoy helping with programming and data analysis, whether you’re learning to code for the first time, working through an assignment, or using R or Python for a research project.

My teaching style is friendly, interactive, and tailored to each student. I don’t want students to just memorize steps, I want them to understand why something works and to build the confidence to tackle similar problems on their own. I use examples, visuals, analogies, and hands-on practice, and I’m happy to explain something in different ways until we find the one that clicks.

I’ve designed and directed a national high school data science program, developed R and Python curricula, mentored working professionals in data science, and taught coding workshops for researchers at UNC. My honors include an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, UNC Three Minute Thesis finalist, and Pepperdine’s Outstanding Biology Graduate award.

Whether you’re looking for ongoing tutoring or help with a tricky topic, assignment, or project, send me a message and tell me what you’re working on. I’d love to see if I’m a good fit!

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I have a BS in Biology and a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, along with more than 10 years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students in biology and STEM. I’ve taught and supported students in subjects including general biology, cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, and related life sciences, from introductory through college-level courses. My research background gives me a deep understanding of biology, but I especially enjoy making complex concepts approachable using visuals, analogies, and real-world examples. I tailor my teaching to each student and focus on building both understanding and confidence rather than simply memorizing material.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and extensive experience applying statistics to biological research and real-world data. My research and teaching experience includes hypothesis testing, experimental design, regression, data visualization, statistical interpretation, and reproducible analysis, primarily using R and Python. I’ve taught statistics and data analysis to high school students, university researchers, and adult learners with a wide range of experience levels. I especially enjoy helping students build intuition for statistical concepts, understand why and when to use different methods, and interpret what their results actually mean.
Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I have a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill, where data analysis was a major part of my computational research. I have extensive experience analyzing complex datasets using R and Python, including statistical analysis, data visualization, experimental design, and reproducible research, and have published this work in peer-reviewed journals. I have also taught data analysis and programming to high school students, university researchers, and working professionals. I enjoy helping students choose appropriate methods, understand their results, and communicate what their data actually show.
Data Science

Data Science

I directed a national data science research program for high school students. I designed curricula in both Python and R covering data wrangling, visualization, statistics, machine learning, and working with real-world datasets, while guiding students through independent research projects. I also use data science extensively in my own computational research and have mentored adult learners through Posit’s Data Science Academy. I focus on building intuition and helping students understand not just how to use data science tools, but why and when to use them.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I have a BS in Biology and a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, along with more than 10 years of experience teaching and mentoring students in STEM. I’ve worked with younger students through science outreach and mentoring programs and love making biology engaging and easy to understand. I use visuals, analogies, real-world examples, and hands-on thinking to break down new concepts in ways that make sense to each student. My goal is to help students understand the science while building their curiosity and confidence.
General Computer

General Computer

I have more than 10 years of experience teaching and supporting learners with technology, from complete beginners to experienced researchers and working professionals. I’m comfortable helping with computer basics, navigating common software and online tools, file organization, troubleshooting, and building confidence with unfamiliar technology. As a STEM and technology educator, I’ve worked with learners of all ages and especially enjoy breaking technical tasks into simple, manageable steps. No prior experience is necessary, and I’m happy to start wherever you are and work at your pace.
Genetics

Genetics

I have a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and a BS in Biology, with extensive research experience in genomics, genetics, and gene regulation. My doctoral research focused on how the 3D organization of the genome influences gene regulation, and I’ve published multiple peer-reviewed papers based on my research. I also have more than 10 years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students in biology and STEM. I enjoy making topics like inheritance, DNA, chromosomes, gene expression, and genomics approachable through visuals, analogies, and step-by-step explanations.
Machine Learning/ AI

Machine Learning/ AI

I have several years of experience teaching machine learning and AI and developing technical curricula for both students and educators. I’ve taught ML topics including decision trees, random forests, clustering, PCA, and model evaluation in Python and scikit-learn, and have helped develop and deliver an AI professional development program for educators focused on understanding and effectively using AI. My current work in emerging technology education also includes supporting programs in AI, data science, and other emerging technologies. I focus on building an intuitive understanding of how AI and ML work, when different approaches are useful, and how to use these tools thoughtfully and responsibly.
R

R

I have more than seven years of experience using and teaching R, and I especially enjoy helping complete beginners learn to code from scratch. I’ve taught R to learners of all ages and backgrounds, from high school students with no prior coding experience to university researchers and working professionals, and focus on making the fundamentals approachable and intuitive. I’ve also used R extensively in my PhD research, developed open-source R/Bioconductor packages, and mentored learners through Posit’s Data Science Academy. Whether you’re opening R for the first time or need help with the tidyverse, visualization, statistics, debugging, or research workflows, I’m happy to meet you at your level.
