Hi folks! My name is Sparrow, and I'm a PhD student at UCLA specializing in ancient history, language, and culture. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring and TAing students in writing skills, critical thinking and media literacy, and history and religion.

I hold the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy from UCLA, and helping students strengthen their writing abilities at all levels has been my privilege and joy these past several years. I have both taught small classrooms of 20 or so students and held one-on-one meetings with students both online and in person; my experience includes helping students with their curriculum from other professors, as well as building my own curriculum to teach. Throughout my studies in my undergraduate, my Masters, and my PhD, I have studied ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, with a focus on the Late Bronze Age in the Levant. I have excelled in my own archaeology coursework at the graduate level, and like my tutoring to focus on both practical basics and foundational knowledge as well as the art of interpreting archaeological finds and dig site details.

I study the Bible for a living in its original language(s), and have passed all my PhD exams related to biblical Hebrew and Aramaic. I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Bible Studies. I received by Bachelors in Religion with a specialization in Bible Studies and a minor in Jewish Studies from Rice University in 2017. I then attended Yale Divinity School, earning my Masters in Bible in 2020. Since 2020, I have been pursuing a PhD in Hebrew Bible through UCLA's NELC department. While being a scholar of Bible professionally for the past 13 years, I have had the opportunity to be Teaching Associate for my professors' courses, successfully teaching over 10 classes in Bible and Bible-adjacent subjects to more than 220 students over the years.

Throughout my studies, in my BA, my Masters, and my PhD coursework, I have focused on ancient Near Eastern language and cultures with a crucial eye towards the Classics, studying ancient Greek (mostly Koine, with specific coursework targeted to strengthen Classical Greek as well). Greek and Roman history alike intersect constantly with my work, and I have a scholarly grasp of the most widely read ancient Greek and Roman texts. Additionally, I have taught coursework entitled "Medicine, Magic, and the Ancient World" at UCLA, which highlights Greek and Roman medical practices against the backdrop of ancient Near Eastern medicine from Egypt and Mesopotamia. I am equipped to help students learn introductory Koine Greek as well as help them read Greek and Roman texts in translation in English, study the culture, and study major historical events from both ancient Greece and ancient Rome, before, during, and after their empires.

I focused on CX/Cross-Ex/Cross Examination-style debate, and I competed all around Texas for both UIL (University Interscholastic League) and the NFL (National Forensics League), qualifying for and attending State. This experience also allowed me to participate in the competitive Texas Bluebonnet Girls' State program, where I wrote and defended policy, ultimately getting the chance to speak to this work on the floor of the Texas congress.

My mother, a fine artist based in Houston, TX, taught me everything I know when it comes to textile creation: sewing, pattern construction, crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery, tatting, etc., and the list goes on! She learned from her mother, who was taught by her mother, and so I am a proud member of a long line of matrilineal instruction in fiber and textile arts as well as crafts and handiworks. I have sold several pieces of my own, especially my embroidery and cross stitch, and am otherwise a hobbiest who uses these skills every single day around the home.

I proudly hold the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy from UCLA's Writing Programs department, having earned it after rigorous coursework in pedagogy and on-the-job training throughout the course of my PhD work. In addition to my teaching, I also write essays and thesis-based writing for a living in my own academics, so I am also very familiar with the real-world importance and implications of essay writing.

Helped me find strcuture and momentum for my PhD dissertation

Sparrow has been a huge help in getting the ball rolling on my PhD thesis in computational physics/molecular simulation. I’m a STEM person and writing projects have always felt intimidating to me, and I was stalling before I started meeting with her. She has helped me clarify my storylines, process advisor feedback, understand the role of different sections, break the work into manageable pieces, and get started on steps I have been procrastinating. She is really good at listening to my overwhelmed thoughts about the project and helping me turn them into usable themes, manageable sections, and practical next steps.
