Hi folks! My name is Sparrow, and I'm a PhD student at UCLA specializing in ancient history, language, and culture. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring and TAing students in writing skills, critical thinking and media literacy, and history and religion.
I hold the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy from UCLA, and helping students strengthen their writing abilities at all levels has been my privilege and joy these past several years. I have both taught small classrooms of 20 or so students and held one-on-one meetings with students both online and in person; my experience includes helping students with their curriculum from other professors, as well as building my own curriculum to teach. I most enjoy catering lesson plans to the student and their needs and helping students find their passions and their voices.

Approved Subjects

Bar Mitzvah

Bar Mitzvah

I study the Bible for a living in its original language(s), and have passed all my PhD exams related to biblical Hebrew and Aramaic. In addition to my explicit teaching experience for the past five and a half years at the collegiate level, I also was a dedicated summer camp counselor for many years, so I know how to have fun while teaching 9-14 year olds too!
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Bible Studies. I received by Bachelors in Religion with a specialization in Bible Studies and a minor in Jewish Studies from Rice University in 2017. I then attended Yale Divinity School, earning my Masters in Bible in 2020. Since 2020, I have been pursuing a PhD in Hebrew Bible through UCLA's NELC department. While being a scholar of Bible professionally for the past 13 years, I have had the opportunity to be Teaching Associate for my professors' courses, successfully teaching over 10 classes in Bible and Bible-adjacent subjects to more than 220 students over the years.
Debate

Debate

Throughout my time in high school, I was a dedicated Debate Team member. I focused on CX/Cross-Ex/Cross Examination-style debate, and I competed all around Texas for both UIL (University Interscholastic League) and the NFL (National Forensics League), qualifying for and attending State. This experience also allowed me to participate in the competitive Texas Bluebonnet Girls' State program, where I wrote and defended policy, ultimately getting the chance to speak to this work on the floor of the Texas congress.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I earned the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy from UCLA in 2024, after completing rigorous coursework and on-the-job training for it during my PhD, including teaching both Writing I and II at UCLA since 2020. I have been the instructor for 12 full quarters at UCLA, helping roughly 240 college students succeed in their writing coursework.
Religion

Religion

I have studied religion academically, professionally, and at university for the past 13 years. I received my Bachelors degree from Rice University in Religion with a minor in Jewish studies in 2017, and went on to pursue two graduate degrees (Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University in 2020, and I am a current PhD student in Near Eastern Language and Cultures with a focus on Hebrew Bible from UCLA). I have taught religious studies coursework over 11 times, and am actively working on my dissertation to complete my PhD in ancient Near Eastern religions.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have taught essay and thesis writing at the collegiate level at UCLA, teaching the whole gamut from freshman to seniors, since 2020. I teach how to draft thesis statements and topic sentences, peer-based reviewing and editing, and larger, project-based work like helping students craft full research projects in their own subfields, write drafts, and edit their own work. I proudly hold the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy from UCLA's Writing Programs department, having earned it after rigorous coursework in pedagogy and on-the-job training throughout the course of my PhD work. In addition to my teaching, I also write essays and thesis-based writing for a living in my own academics, so I am also very familiar with the real-world importance and implications of essay writing.

Helped me find strcuture and momentum for my PhD dissertation

Sparrow has been a huge help in getting the ball rolling on my PhD thesis in computational physics/molecular simulation. I’m a STEM person and writing projects have always felt intimidating to me, and I was stalling before I started meeting with her. She has helped me clarify my storylines, process advisor feedback, understand the role of different sections, break the work into manageable pieces, and get started on steps I have been procrastinating. She is really good at listening to my overwhelmed thoughts about the project and helping me turn them into usable themes, manageable sections, and practical next steps. She is so fun to work with, and I leave our sessions with real momentum. Working with her has made the thesis feel much more possible, and I would highly recommend her to graduate students or anyone working on a thesis, dissertation, or major writing project.
