I am a writing tutor and academic editor specializing in graduate-level writing, including application essays, personal statements, statements of purpose, and thesis and dissertation editing. I hold a PhD from the University of Oxford in theology and philosophy, and my first degree was in the sciences, which allows me to comfortably support both humanities and scientific writing. I have worked extensively with argument structure, clarity, and scholarly communication, and I have also worked professionally as a writer, ghostwriter, and editor on multiple nonfiction books published by major houses, including HarperCollins and Penguin, supporting authors in shaping complex ideas into clear, compelling long-form works.
My tutoring experience spans many years and settings. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, I worked as a tutor supporting fellow students with writing and coursework, which gave me an early foundation in one-on-one academic instruction. Since then, my work has focused primarily on advanced academic and professional writing. I regularly help students and researchers refine application essays for master’s, PhD, and professional programs, as well as edit and strengthen dissertation and thesis chapters across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. I frequently work with non-native English speakers and am especially attentive to academic tone, flow, and precision while preserving the writer’s authentic voice.
My approach is practical, collaborative, and goal-oriented. I begin by clarifying the expectations of the program, advisor, or committee, then work with students to sharpen the central argument, improve organization, and refine language at both the structural and sentence level. Whether we are preparing an application essay under deadline or revising a dissertation chapter or scientific paper for submission, my goal is not only to improve the document at hand, but to help students gain confidence and clarity they can carry forward into future academic work.
