As an Aerospace Engineering graduate (Bachelor's in Engineering), I have extensive knowledge in STEM subjects through undergraduate level, as well as strong writing and language arts skills. When obtaining my first degree, I was on the President's list every semester except my last, when I received the Dean's list award. My ACT score each time was 31, with math being my best subject. I have tutored for years, starting in high school and continuing to current day. My previous tutoring experience ranged from elementary aged children to select college classes, in all subject areas (math, science, English, etc.). The majority of my experience has been one-on-one online sessions, and some were on an as-needed basis but most were repeating weekly sessions. I especially have experience with students who are gifted and need a challenge, and students with ADHD who need a more individual approach.
I've always said I know I've done my job well when the student doesn't need me anymore, because that means they've gained the tools they need to succeed independently. My goal is not to just teach the material, although that is a very important immediate goal, but to also equip the student so they can go confidently into their own life goals. Beyond that, my methods are whatever the student needs. It is a little difficult to describe my methods as they are so varied; as varied as the students who need them! We can use traditional means (textbooks, repetition, flashcards, etc.) or we can try something new and fun, such as turning the material into a game or making rhymes out of it. I do strive to connect the material to what the student's interests and to make it relevant to real-world experiences they are likely to encounter, to give the student a reason to be interested in the work. Constant research in new teaching methods is a must if I want to succeed as a tutor and help the students succeed themselves so I apply myself in this way gladly. I am happy to use the materials the student brings or supply my own too!
