About Ava

Bio

“I hate math!” is a sentence I’ve grown up hearing from friends, siblings, and various people I meet. Math doesn’t always come easy to people, and that is completely fair. However, for me, math has always been something I see as a fun challenge or puzzle. I love teaching math to others. I used to help out my classmates with homework problems since I just enjoy teaching. It’s always an amazing feeling to watch the “aha moment" occur. Because of this, I decided to volunteer tutoring SAT math...

Because of this, I decided to volunteer tutoring SAT math for Schoolhouse when I was in high school. It was a good experience for me, and now I find myself ready once again to tutor something I’m passionate about.
I am a college student with a major in Neuroscience and a double minor in Math and Spanish. I graduated top of my high school class, excelling in all subjects. My college GPA of 4.0 and my SAT math score of a 750 provide you with some insight into the type of student I am. With a background of tutoring 16 year olds via Zoom, I have an understanding of how to tutor math, especially in test prep contexts. My method is simple: I do, we do, you do (IDWDYD). This is the foundation of how I teach students. First, I do an example problem for the student that covers the tricky topic. Then, we do another similar problem, working on this one together. Finally, the student does a practice problem on their own. It is a simple method that I experienced as a student myself in my AP Chemistry class in high school. This method was functional, efficient, and helped me to achieve a 5 on the AP exam.
In addition to IDWDYD, I can adjust to new forms of teaching problems and adapt to the unique learning styles of my students. Furthermore, questions are always accepted and encouraged during sessions, as they help me understand where the student is specifically struggling.
I hope this information assures you that I would be a great tutor for High School or SAT/ACT math. If you find yourself in need of a tutor who is young, flexible, passionate, and hardworking, I would love to work with you!
