I have been tutoring for over 15 years across the United States, China, and now North Carolina, working with students from grade 2 through high school. My academic background includes a strong foundation in mathematics and languages, and I am also a certified personal trainer and EMT, which speaks to my ability to teach with clarity, patience, and structure. In addition to my tutoring work, I lead a nonprofit organization, where I design educational programs and communicate complex ideas in accessible ways.

My tutoring experience covers a wide range of subjects: K–10 math, Algebra, Geometry, English Language Arts, creative writing, French, and Chinese. I have also guided students in test preparation for the SAT, ISEE, and other standardized exams. In my sessions, I emphasize developing strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking rather than rote memorization. I adapt my approach to each learner’s needs—using visual explanations for younger students, Socratic questioning for advanced learners, and structured strategies for those who need more organization and confidence.

Over the years, I have worked with a diverse set of learners, including gifted students who crave challenge as well as those with ADHD, autism, or learning differences who require more individualized support. I believe every student can succeed with the right mix of encouragement, rigor, and strategy. My goal as a tutor is to help students not only master content but also gain the independence and confidence to tackle new challenges on their own.

Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

As a world traveler who's lived and worked in China, India, and France, teaching in each of these countries, I've gotten to work with many ESL learners. In addition, my wife is French! What does this mean? That accent reduction has always been a factor in my classes, for the past 15 years! We'll work on analyzing recorded speech, sprucing up pronunciation - one piece at a time - and eliminating awkward pauses. We'll work on identifying which English sounds are hardest for you, and drilling correct pronunciation. We'll practice word stress, sentence rhythm, , intonation and pitch, and connected speech. Of course, practical application will play a role in these classes, with role-play, recording + listening back for self-correction, and putting ourselves in real communication situations to test ourselves + get comfortable with speaking great English in real-life settings.
ADHD

ADHD

I have over 14 years of tutoring experience across multiple grade levels, including extensive work with students who have ADHD. My approach emphasizes structure, patience, and clear, engaging lessons that help students stay focused and build confidence. I adapt teaching methods to individual learning styles and create supportive strategies for organization and follow-through. I’ve also worked with learners with a variety of special needs, including ADHD, autism, and dyslexia.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have over 14 years of experience tutoring math, with a strong focus on Algebra 1. I help students build confidence by breaking problems into simple steps and showing them how the concepts connect, not just how to memorize formulas. My lessons are structured but flexible, so I can adapt to different learning styles and pace. I’ve supported students preparing for classroom tests, standardized exams, and long-term math success, and I make sure they leave each session more confident and capable. My favorite topic to teach - math can be quite fun!
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I've been tutoring for about 15 years, and over those years have had the privilege to work with multiple students on the autism spectrum, who - you won't be surprised to hear - are among my favorites. My approach emphasizes patience, structure, and individualized strategies for building confidence. Since autism comes in many shapes and sizes, this means we'll have adapted, tailor-made lessons, more refined as I get to know the student. As always, the goal is establishing an independent love of learning, as well as developing executive functioning skills.
Common Core

Common Core

I have over 14 years of experience tutoring students in grades 2–10 using Common Core standards for math and English Language Arts. My approach helps learners not just meet grade-level expectations, but also gain confidence in problem-solving and critical thinking. I focus on breaking down challenging concepts into clear steps, aligning lessons directly with Common Core benchmarks. I have supported students preparing for classroom tests, state assessments, and skill-building beyond the curriculum.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have over 14 years of experience teaching and tutoring creative writing to students of all ages. I’ve guided learners through brainstorming, drafting, and editing, even helping some publish their own stories to share with classmates and families. My approach focuses on sparking creativity while also teaching structure, voice, and revision skills that make students stronger writers. As someone who has written my own chapter book and is pursuing publication, I know both the challenges and the excitement of the writing process, and I love helping students find their own voice while having fun + enjoying the freedom of creative writing.

I have over 14 years of experience tutoring math, including with elementary students. I focus on building a strong foundation in number sense, problem solving, and confidence. I’ve also worked with students who struggle with attention or learning differences, adapting lessons so they can grasp concepts step by step. And, most importantly, we make the subject fun, so the learner can become more independent and enthusiastic over time!
EMT/ NREMT

EMT/ NREMT

This is probably the most fun subject to teach, since it's so applicable in real life. I've been a member of our fire department here for 5 years, and have been an EMT for 3. I know about the pressures of studying for EMT certification, and know what it takes to pass. Out of 12 students in my class, I was one of only three who ended up passing! As a member of the fire department here, I have a lot of hands-on experience in a wide range of medical emergencies. I've responded to over 300 calls, and have used what we learn in EMT: patient assessment, trauma response, airway management, CPR, field dressing, and more. Bringing real-life context to lessons not only makes studying easier - it makes it fun! W
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I've been teaching essay-writing for the past 10+ years for all different age groups. For younger learners, we lean a bit more on having fun while writing essays, with more interesting topics (e.g., your favorite superhero), and keep essay structural concepts simple, mapping out an introduction with main answer and two reasons, followed by two body paragraphs, and then a conclusion. For more experienced learners, we dive into more nuanced/complicated essay structures, including expository essays, research essays, and more. Usually we look over the rubric first, have the student create a skeleton/scaffolding for the entire essay, and then get them to fill it in. Then, the student can worry about grammar/spelling/flow. In either case, by making essay writing into a simplified algorithm that is broken into chunks, the student can eventually master the art of writing a great essay.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

I’ve worked with students for over 14 years, helping them strengthen organization, planning, and study habits alongside their academics. Many of my students struggle with executive functioning challenges such as managing time, starting tasks, or staying focused, and I’ve developed practical strategies that make these skills easier to build. I focus on breaking down larger goals into manageable steps and giving students the tools they need to take ownership of their learning. I’ve also supported learners with ADHD and other attention challenges, helping them gain confidence both in and out of the classroom.
Fiction Writing

I have over 14 years of experience helping students bring their creative writing ideas to life. I’ve guided learners through the full process—brainstorming, drafting, editing, and even publishing their own stories. Several of my students have proudly shared their finished books at school celebrations, reading them aloud to classmates. Alongside teaching, I’ve written my own chapter book and continue working toward publication, so I know firsthand the challenges and rewards of the writing journey. My focus is on making writing exciting, confidence-building, and fun.
Fitness

Fitness

I've been helping others with personal training since I became certified in 2024. Besides this, I've always been a health fanatic - and I'm a yoga teacher! I have a gym in my basement - built/installed by myself - so I'm quite familiar with equipment and how to use it. Very excited to help you get healthy!

I understand how important structure, flexibility, and personalized learning are in a homeschool setting. My approach focuses on tailoring lessons to each child’s pace and interests while still keeping them aligned with academic goals. I emphasize test-taking techniques, time management, and building confidence in English communication. Many of my students have achieved the band scores they needed for university admissions or career opportunities.
ISEE

I am currently teaching ISEE prep and have helped multiple students build the skills they needed to pass and move on to their next school. My lessons cover all sections of the test—verbal, reading, quantitative reasoning, and math—while also focusing on test-taking strategies and time management. I adapt my approach to each student’s strengths and areas for growth, keeping lessons clear, encouraging, and confidence-building. Parents appreciate that I bring structure and accountability while also making sure students don’t feel overwhelmed.
Poker

Poker

Amazing - the crossroads of two of my favorite topics: poker and tutoring! I've been playing poker since high school (2004). Have played in Las Vegas WSOP tournaments (nearly won a "dealer's choice" tourney with Greg Raymer at FT), am experienced in all forms (though I love Omaha more than any), and can help with bankroll management, strategy, and more.

Several of my students have seen strong improvements in practice scores and entered test day ready to perform at their best. Strict testing simulation is a must for success, so this is a big factor as well! Happy to help you set this up + guide through the process, while we tackle problem areas.
