Bio

Hi! I'm John. I'm a Magna Cum Laude graduate of UNC-Charlotte where I earned a Bachelor of Music with a Concentration in Instrumental Performance: Cello. Upon entering college, I was placed in the highest-level Music Theory class. It was there that I discovered that I could help my friends better understand difficult music theory concepts such as chord resolution and complex sight-singing. I'm able to make Music Theory clear, and I provide lots of encouragement!

It was there that I discovered that I could help my friends better understand difficult music theory concepts such as chord resolution and complex sight-singing. In regards to Music History, I received an Outstanding Scholar Award for Music History, and know how to simplify a large volume of information. I am able to explain the significance of a musical era, composer, historical work, plus ways to conduct research.
In regards to cello playing, I teach students grades K-12, as well as college students. I am especially interested in teaching students with special needs, and celebrate neurodiversity! If you chose me to be your instructor, I'll build your endurance with cello, plus demonstrate which techniques will produce the most beautiful sound. I focus on technique because my cello professor does, and she graduated from one of the top conservatories in the United States!
When you choose me as your instructor for Music Theory, Music History, or Cello, you will meet a clear, concise, and kind instructor ready to take you to the next level! Your time will be valued, and I'll design a plan that builds on your strengths, reduces any weaknesses, and ensures that you succeed!

Music History

In college, I excelled in my Music History classes and I was awarded the "Outstanding Scholar in Music Research" award. I can help students remember all the details associated with these various periods of music: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. I enjoy seeing students master a very challenging topic.

Cello,

Cello

I am the cellist who is interested in teaching students aged four to infinity! After one lesson, I'm able to assess where you are in your playing and take you to even higher levels of cello mastery! I have extensive experience playing cello in professional and community orchestras. I've performed with my college classmates in string trios and quartets. Churches have welcomed me to perform during worship. My background includes Suzuki cello instruction along with a strong belief in music volunteerism.

Friendly and engaged tutor

Quite pleased with the first two lessons from John for my sixth grade daughter, who is just starting trying to get more instruction than is available at school in her second year with the cello. He is very engaged with her and patient and clear in his instruction, and she has enjoyed the first few lessons.

John has excellent communication. He is prompt and professional, and easy to get in touch with. The lesson was wonderful. I would highly recommend John as a cello teacher for any student.

Professional and patient teacher

John was prepared for our first lesson. He shared materials electronically that I needed to see on order to participate in the lesson. We discussed the different parts of the cello and he taught me how the different notes on each string. We went over plucking and bowing several scales and even played some songs. He also answered many questions that I had about playing cello in general. It was a very productive lesson.

Great beginner lesson!

John taught me the parts of the cello, the strings, and a basic 4 notes on each string by finger plucking the strings. Then he showed me how to hold and use the bow. I think he's great for anyone who has used a few instruments before and is familiar with notes on stringed instruments and sounds inn general. If you are a complete music novice this lesson would have been a little too advanced. But I'm sure if you tell him you need to start at the very fundamentals he would be happy to oblige.

Tutor responded:

I really enjoyed working with Kellie! It was great to help her to get her cello completely in tune and prepared for future cello playing!

Encouraging and patient tutor!

John helped my son practice his cello assignment this week and he is really good at encouraging my son and helping him slow down and get everything right. He is patient and he listens to our concerns about the areas needing improvement. He also accommodated a last minute change request. Very good experience. Thank you John.
