About Correy

I have been a teacher all my life and became certified in 1991 in New York. I have taught second grade and fifth grade in NYC and special education in Denver for two years while I worked on by Masters in special education. I am currently a first grade teacher with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools; where I have learned and implemented many new skills and teaching methods.
While teaching in different communities. I have always provided tutoring free of charge for my students before and after school. I have also tutored children in the community including children with special needs and language barriers. I am committed to an individual's success by taking time for students to master the material necessary for them to achieve life-long classroom success. I am a highly effective teacher with experience in multiple grade levels and subjects. I frequently use real world examples to keep the lessons interesting and exciting for the students. I can individualize this approach to highlight your child's strengths. I have tutored children for years and I love working with them one-to-one or in small groups. I can create an environment and lessons which will help your child absorb new information and retain it for future use.
I am currently pursuing my doctorate and I work part-time teaching ESL in an outreach program at my church. I appreciate your interest in my profile and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have ten years of teaching experience, and currently hold a valid teaching licences in North Carolina, certified in curriculum instruction k-12. I have 5 years of tutoring experience, where I successfully brought children reading performance up to grade level over the span of 9 months.

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting in every classroom I have taught in because I feel it is very important. I can help improve children's writing from forming letters to writing cursive. Handwriting takes a lot of practice and with guidance it can be an asset for any student.

Phonics

I teach effective phonics using explicit, systematic instruction and practice. Students must learn to match a unit of sound (a phoneme) to the letter or letters that make the sound (a grapheme). Separating the written word into its individual sounds and blending the individual sounds of letters to make words is the foundation of reading.

Study Skills

I find that children often struggle with organization, which can create a negative learning experience. I prefer to teach children organizational techniques and routines that they can implement at school and at home. I also feel it is important to set goals and help them organize their time so that successful completion of the assignments occurs. The feeling of success permeates through everything they do; this creates a life-long learner.
