American History

American History

Our history is a remarkable story, meaningful to teach. I desire for all to know our past so that our future will be richer. You will begin by examining artworks & visuals. After picture analysis, you are well prepped to understand our historical record. History is a connected story. Tutoring involves comprehending the story, so that you know where we arrived from and where we are headed. I have 7 years of experience teaching American History in middle school & am certified in Social Studies.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

A certified instructor in both elementary and middle grades, I have been teaching since graduation from college. Eight of these years gave me experience in a variety of middle school subjects: reading, writing, grammar, phonics. I have ample experience with children and teens, both as a classroom teacher & tutor. My methods include computer based reinforcement of concepts, games and manipulatives, plus assistance with assignments.
English

English

My BS ED degree includes a language arts concentration, thus my teaching license certifies me in this subject. I have eight years of English teaching experience in middle school; four years in high school instructing American Literature. As a tutor, I have one-on-one experience assisting with grammar, reading, writing & literature.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

A native English speaker with 28 years as an ESL teacher, I have much experience aiding teens & adults gain English skills. My instruction is visual for I use PowerPoints which I have created. An ESL endorsement is on my teaching certificate. My experience includes beginners to those preparing for TOEFL iBT.
European History

European History

Earlier in my career I taught in Europe for two years. My interactions with nationals, and especially my travels, made vivid impressions. The leaders of western civilization made great, positive contributions to our world. A good understanding of European History helps students understand many trends and movements. My desire is to make this come alive for learners. Utilizing great art and rich music are my initial tools to accomplish this.
GED

GED

My use of computer applications will help ease the difficulty of reading, language, and writing for GED students. My method is to assist you with your own materials, then use high interest applications to help you learn and experience success.
Geography

Geography

A solid understanding of Geography helps when approaching all social studies courses. In graduate school, teachers were given a test on map skills. I was pleased to have the highest score in that class. Maps are the beginning of the visuals I use in geography. Analysis of photographs, builds higher level thinking skills, plus a deep understanding of these geographical concepts: topography, climate, native species, natural resources, and people.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

My best tutoring experience with Civics was an ESL student who found reading difficult. He had no background in politics. Yet his current events project earned the highest grade in his class. Tutoring provided the structure to complete the task & the guidance to follow directions. The resulting grade greatly boosted the confidence of the learner. Certified in social studies, I've aided students with Civics, plus immigrants preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Test & Naturalization Interview.
Grammar

Grammar

I have the patience to work with students as they learn the complexities of grammar. My use of board games and websites adds interest to a subject some pupils find boring. These resources provide the needed repetition to master grammar. My current teaching license certifies me to teach language arts/English.
Literature

Literature

A certified language arts teacher, I instructed high school American Literature for four years. Even the oldest, most obscure selection has themes which are as modern as today's news or your last e-mail. Traditional discussions and the use of contemporary media are tools I use to make literature, reading & English come alive.
Phonics

Phonics

Coursework for my BS Ed and M Ed included classes in the teaching of reading. Emphasis on a phonics approached has ebbed and flowed during the years of my career. Yet, during the times phonics was in the scope and sequence of language instruction, it proved to be greatly helpful to the learners. My experience teaching phonics will be useful for families desiring this approach.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My most effective proofreading tutoring experience was with an adult on the board of directors of a homeowners' association. The volunteer work required much writing. My proofreading assistance saw that the documents communicated with correct usage. The student learned grammar and writing skills in the process. Project-based learning greatly helped this pupil in English.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My years as a teacher have provided forums to speak publicly. Often I receive affirmative comments from those in the audience. As a language arts teacher, yearly I design lessons to give pupils an opportunity to practice and perfect a classroom speech. Seeing learners grow and gain confidence in speaking is always rewarding.
Reading

Reading

My college & graduate coursework included numerous courses in the teaching of reading & phonics. Years of classroom experience have helped me to gain skills which can improve your reading ability. In tutoring, I often let the pupil make the reading selections, for text which is of high interest to the learner aids in raising their literacy level. I include graphic organizers & high level comprehension activities to increase critical thinking for elementary & all levels.
Social Studies

Social Studies

Both my BS ED and M ED degrees included social studies education. In graduate school at GA State, I was accepted into the Master Teachers of Economics Education program. My Scholarly Study for my ED S degree involved writing curriculum about the nation of Turkey. My eight years of classroom instruction, plus travels to 25 states & 14 countries, well prepare me to tutor history, geography & government. If you find them boring, I want to share my enthusiasm with you.
Spelling

Spelling

Spelling presently does not have the emphasis in formal education which it once did. My career started with ample instruction in this important skill. As a certified language arts/English teacher, I feel that the study of spelling is critical. My experience and guidance can help the present generation be strong spellers.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Study Skills - like SQ3R, Cornell Note Takers, and skimming / scanning - are invaluable tools to increase performance and memory. Assistance with time management is also very helpful. Tutoring is an optimum forum to see that a learner shows understanding of how to make these strategies work. Having been a teacher since age 22, I have seen understanding of these skills improve performance and confidence.
TOEFL

TOEFL

An ESL teacher for over two decades, I have experience tutoring immigrants through the complexities of the TOEFL iBT. The hard work required to improve language is made easier by my humorous, caring, and steadied approach. I provide the guidance to explain the unique procedures and provide repeated practice opportunities for the listening, speaking, reading and writing portions of this English test.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is best taught in the context of reading. Words are emphasized as they are presented in literature. Yet, in courses like TOEFL & history, it is necessary to learn great amounts of vocabulary. Students respond well to my use of graphic organizers and word walls. Both creatively assist in increasing English vocabulary.
World History

World History

World History is challenging. Much content is presented so quickly. My approach allows the learner to slow down to understand the story,& emotions, behind the dates & far away places. History should be presented as 1 connected story. This is my aim. My best success in tutoring history occurred when a student told me that I clearly explained the subject better than their teacher. Currently certified in social studies, I want to open up the world, & its history, for you.
Writing

Writing

Writing is like a sport. One must have lots of practice & coaching to become proficient. My experience includes guiding learners through the writing process. I assist pupils in improving their style & written communication skills by having them construct prose which will actually be read by someone. Composing a letter to a famous person, or a newspaper, bears much relevance to the learner. They're absorbed in the process & are willing to make revisions before the comments are 'published.'

Great Tutor for World History, Patient, and Very Knowledgeable

Davis responded within two hours after I went on-line trying to find a tutor for my son for high school world history. We started the first two sessions in person and because he was travelling, we have done the next two sessions over the phone. Davis knows the material very well. Even though he did not have a text book to review the material for the answers when we did the last two sessions over the phone, you would have thought he had the book in front of him as he gave feed back for each question my son had homework and finals review. He has been very patient and encouraging to m son for each session. This is the first time we have used a tutor and I hope we can find others in the future as good as Davis for other subjects.

Exceptional tutor with valuable lessons and immense patience

Mr. Davis is a brilliant tutor who can bring out the best in his students. He is helping my 9th grader with Language Arts - grammar and essay writing. I must say, the onset of high school was made easy under the expert guidance of Mr. Davis, who made some great book recommendations over the summer and coached my son how to write effectively. He continues to encourage my son to follow current events that should help him with other subjects too. I was very pleased to see my son's recent essay with its fine word choices and variety of sentences. To sum it up, Mr. Davis is a marvelous teacher!

Wonderful teacher!

Mr. P. has been teaching my two sons who are 12 and 15 years old. They are both ESL students who moved from Japan last April and started an American public school. Their English is limited, but they put the effort to learn. Mr. P. has been working with my sons for the first school semester once a week an hour each. He has been very patient, clear, kind, and has confidence in both my sons. He is not only a good teacher, he is a wonderful person from the heart. I am lucky and blessed to have found such an awesome tutor for my sons. They too are happy with Mr. P. and are looking forward to working with him in the second semester and the remaining school years to come. He is an excellent ESOL teacher and a wonderful World History teacher. My son made a 76 on his final exam in the first semester and I know for a fact Mr. P. played a big part of that high C.
