I am currently a 3rd year marine science graduate student at UNC, Chapel Hill. I did my undergrad in UC Santa Barbara and obtained a B.S. in aquatic biology in 2016. I have skills in culturing, bioinformatics, and other molecular techniques common in microbiology. I also have prior experience in tutoring and have had the opportunity to lecture undergraduate courses at UNC as a teaching assistant. Additionally, having obtained a 790 in the writing/grammar portion of the SAT, and 5.5/6 in the writing portions of the GRE, I believe that I have what it takes to help other students excel in areas of writing and grammar.
One thing I love about tutoring is the satisfaction that comes when my students are able to not only understand the topic but also apply it. I really enjoyed when students would come into my office hours to ask questions about the course I was a TA for. I was especially excited when I could answer the students’ questions, but also when I could help them understand why that was the answer. Often times, as with most college course questions, the answer is usually ambiguous and complex, so it was very stimulating to be in deep conversation about the topics, and I found that I was also learning even more at the same time. In summary, when I can help others learn, I also learn.
I have a B.S. in aquatic biology, and have taken a rigorous series of courses specifically focused on the subject during my undergrad. I also possess the basic biology background that will enable me to help with a diverse array of topics common in biological sciences. Similarly, I’ve taken many microbiology courses in both my undergraduate and graduate programs, ranging from molecular genetics to microbial ecology. I was able to obtain high passes in 3 out of my 4 core graduate courses. Furthermore, as I am currently a research assistant and graduate student, I am developing skills in bioinformatics and meta-transcriptomics.
