I have experience in helping people not only learn material, but to also understand why concepts are important and how they apply to their interests and goals. Many of my students have accomplished their goals through improvement of their grades, course performance, and standardized test scores. I firmly believe that with appropriate instruction, any student willing to put forth an effort to learn will be able to improve their performance. I find the most effective approach to learning differs with each student, but there are some general things that I have found to be beneficial for learners of most types. This includes setting appropriate goals, planning, practice with examples and problems, appropriate attention to questions, and asking students to explain back concepts to ensure they understand the information.

Concerning educational qualifications, I finished my undergraduate coursework in 2011 and have since been working as a full time professional in the biotechnology field. I hold a B.S. in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics and a B.A. in History from the University of Maryland. I have tutored students of many ages, and I look forward to the opportunity to help more people achieve their learning potential.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I completed my high school coursework at a Christian school where I took many Bible classes. I also proceeded to complete several Biblical history courses in college and tutored students who struggled to understand the significance of the concepts they were learning in Jewish, Biblical, and Early Christian history courses. My undergraduate history specialization was also in Ancient History, covering much of the time during which the Biblical texts were written.
Genetics

Genetics

This is a subject in which I have familiarity on many levels. Professionally as a biological researcher, genetics are the focus of my research. My Bachelor of Science is also in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. I have experience teaching this subject on a very basic, introductory level, and I am also capable of explaining concepts and mechanisms in as much detail as needed without complicating the material.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

After successfully completing two semesters of coursework in organic chemistry in college, I proceeded to study applications of its principles in biochemistry. In my professional career, I have often applied my knowledge of organic chemistry to select chemicals to use in assays and to design experiments.
Praxis

Praxis

Much like the SAT, ACT, and GRE, the PRAXIS requires proficiency in writing, math, and language. I have tutored three people in the basic principles of each of these, and all three have proceeded to successfully pass their PRAXIS test. From my experience with these students, proper test-taking strategy and adequate explanation of the concepts being tested by the PRAXIS are the major essential keys to success.

Encouraging

Larissa is very easy to talk with and is very methodical in her presentation of problems and working things out. She is observant and asks questions throughout problem solving to ensure that the material is understood. She is also very encouraging which is much appreciated!

Larissa is so thorough.

We feel so fortunate to have found Larissa. She has been a tremendous help to my high school junior and is now starting to work with my freshman. Sometimes just some one on one time is needed. However, Larissa always assigns the girls additional tools to help them with their studies. We look forward to continue to work with her.
