I am a highly experienced math tutor who specializes in helping middle and high school students gain confidence and understanding efficiently. Parents often seek me out when a student needs clear explanations, steady support, and an experienced tutor who can quickly identify what is not clicking.

I have extensive experience supporting students with math anxiety, learning differences, or gaps in prior instruction. My approach is calm, structured, and supportive, with an emphasis on building real understanding rather than memorization.

I work with both ongoing students and those who need focused, short-term academic help. I regularly assist students with preparation for quizzes, unit tests, midterms, finals, and end-of-course exams. I do not provide college entrance test preparation (SAT, ACT, etc.), but I do offer targeted preparation for school-based math exams.

My subjects include Pre-Algebra; Algebra 1 and 2; Geometry; NC Math 1, 2, 3, and 4; and Pre-Calculus.

My background in math began in 1993, tutoring as a volunteer for inner-city youth in Baltimore. I have since logged over 10,000 hours of tutoring experience, including work with Varsity Tutors and many in-person students. Prior to tutoring full-time, I spent nearly 20 years as a molecular biology and genetics researcher at Johns Hopkins and Duke. This background informs my logical, methodical teaching style and helps students see math as a tool for problem-solving.

My schedule is Monday through Friday, including weekends, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time (10pm being the last available time slot).

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Having tutored in the Wake County area for over 10 years, I am familiar with the WCPSS math curriculum. When the Common Core standards came on the scene in 2012, I had to quickly adopt the new material being taught. I am now well versed in Common Core Math, levels 1, 2 and 3, which is a combination of Algebra 1 & 2, geometry, and discrete math. I also tutor all of the honors classes mentioned above.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is now combined with the Common Core standards, which is composed of statistics, probability and discrete math. I took Population Statistics in college, a required course for my biology major, which helped equip me for tutoring the Common Core topics.
Geometry

Geometry

I enjoy helping students who have trouble visualizing how to solve problems, or where to start when trying to solve a proof. Often times a diagram might have too many lines for a student to comprehend what they are looking at. I can help them to dissect a problem into smaller, easier parts, until the whole puzzle is put together and be able to see the bigger picture.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I began tutoring Pre-algebra as a volunteer at an inner city elementary school in Baltimore, MD. for about 3 years. Typically, students struggle in Pre-algebra because they are not skilled with basic math facts, so I make sure they are proficient in that. Tutoring as a volunteer has helped me to quickly target weak areas and help the student to improve upon those.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus was not an offered subject when I was attending school way back when. After Algebra 2, you took trigonometry and then calculus. Times have changed, so I took two semesters of online precalculus classes (parts 1 & 2) at BYU, and got high A's in both courses. I have experience tutoring high school precalculus and have worked with students from Wake Tech.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I tutor all levels of trigonometry from basic right triangle trig, which is taught in middle school, to the more advanced level found in precalculus classes. I can help students solve trig identities (which can be like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle without a picture), trig equations, navigation word problems, and more!

Expert, flexible and relatable

Cristl is an amazing tutor. We were so fortunate to have found her. Not only does she know the topic of Algebra 1, she teaches in an approachable way. My daughter has anxiety with Math and she always left her lesson at ease and smiling. That is huge! Cristl was patient and kind and always helped in a friendly manner. I know my daughter would not have been as successful in her class without her help. We got to the point in the class that was beyond my ability and I can’t tell you the relief felt by not only myself but my daughter to have an expert to call on regularly. Cristl was always responsive and flexible with her availability. We look forward to continuing working with her next year.

Christl is an amazing instructor

Christl is such a skilled instructor , the word tutor seems inadequate. My son’s is much more confide t in math , in assessments and attitude. It’s actually becoming his favorite subject, that’s in part due to the skill of instruction by Christl.

Knowledgable and patient tutor

She's helping my daughter with her Honors 2 assignments and doing practice problem runs with her. Hoping my daughter does well in her class as her teacher is really challenging.

Amazing

Fully confident in my daughter working with Cristl! My daughter has only had one session so far and left the session feeling very comfortable with the geometry lesson. Looking forward to seeing the progress she makes with Cristl!

Awesome Tutor

Cristl was wonderful and patient with my 15 year old daughter. She helped her prepare for an honors geometry test. My daughter felt very good about the session and gained the understanding she needed for the test.

We love Cristl!

Cristl understands my child's sticking points with learning math (since she has been diagnosed with dyscalculia) and makes it VERY approachable and dare I say fun.
