Hi I'm Lou! I recently graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in LGBT Studies. Throughout college the subject matter increased in complexity but was always rooted in the fundamentals of math and physics first introduced in middle and high school. I have a deep understanding of these fundamentals which allows me to teach with confidence.
Beginning in sixth grade and through college, I had peers come to me for help with their math homework. Through peer tutoring I have experience working in Algebra 1 through college level calculus. I have also formally tutored a rising college freshman in Differential Calculus and currently work with high school students several times a week on Algebra 1 through AP Calculus, SAT Math and English, and high school English. At this current tutoring job I work with groups of students as well as one-on-one in both in-person and virtual settings. I have experience in a classroom setting working as a teaching assistant at a variety of STEM summer camps for K-12 students. In this teaching role I walked students through coding problems and filled in any gaps in understanding. Additionally, I am well versed in SAT and ACT subject matter and recently scored a 1540 on an SAT with a math score of 790.
I like to make my lessons as interactive as possible, keeping a balance between explicit teaching, worked through examples, and individual practice. This balance will be adjusted based on the student's needs and my goal is to find the best teaching method for each individual. When working through problems I will always ask the student to give it a go first before I explain the solutions. This helps me figure out exactly where a student needs support and benefits the student by getting them thinking about the problem. I am here to help the students and I am always open to feedback from students and parents. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
