I love helping students understand math and physics concepts through good illustrations, animations, and simulations! Before Wyzant, I tutored local high school and college students at $50/hour. Also taught a physics class for home schoolers.

I earned BS and MS degrees in engineering from MIT including an internship and master's thesis all in just 5 years. I have decades of experience doing R&D in the aerospace and medical fields. I have over 30 US patents. In my current role I...

I earned BS and MS degrees in engineering from MIT including an internship and master's thesis all in just 5 years. I have decades of experience doing R&D in the aerospace and medical fields. I have over 30 US patents. In my current role I develop embedded medical software using matlab, simulink, and stateflow.

The most enjoyable and rewarding job assignment I ever had was when I worked at Shodor (shodor.org). I was asked to teach a javascript class for a week long coding camp. Designing the content and the coding challenges was as fun as the actual teaching! Having an engineering mindset is very helpful for teaching and tutoring.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I'm focused on helping students grasp math concepts, not just the ability to work specific problems. I worked in a university research group focused on teaching and assessment for middle school math, so I'm very in tune with all the math concepts that are critical for students to grasp. Before that I worked at an educational non-profit that created interactive simulations to explain math and physics concepts. That group also ran coding camps for middle/high schoolers in the summer, one of which I taught.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I'm focused on helping students grasp math concepts, not just the ability to work specific problems. I have BS and MS degrees in engineering from MIT. A few years ago I worked with a team doing research on how to teach math to middle schoolers, so I'm aware of which concepts are the most important for a strong foundation in math.
MATLAB

MATLAB

In my engineering career I have written hundreds of Matlab scripts and functions for data analysis, plotting, and even for software development (including Simulink, Stateflow, Embedded Coder).
Physics

Physics

I have a strong intuitive understanding of Newtonian mechanics, and I work hard to pass that understanding on to my tutees. My degrees are in mechanical engineering. During the day I'm a software engineer developing algorithms for a class 3 medical device. Evenings and weekends, I love to tutor!

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have BS and MS degrees in engineering from MIT. I frequently use trig as an engineer and really enjoy teaching it.

Great Matlab tutor

Douglas helped me with a really difficult Matlab code for a Numerical Methods class. He talked me through the steps, explaining what he was doing throughout, and was very patient. Highly recommend.

Knowledgeable and patience

Was able to walk me through step by step and explain the problem all the way through. I am a novice in Matlab and his teaching gave me a better understanding of the material that I was working on.
