I have been in both formal classroom and more informal settings with children from kindergarten to eighth grade. As part of a class requirement, I was a tutor in an after school program for a semester, working with K-8 students on their homework.
I am very patient, and one of my skills is being able to explain things in several different ways. I love children, and I am very passionate about helping them learn. I have always loved to read, and reading to children and helping them learn to read and write has been a natural extension of that for me. I value open communication between myself and my students and their parents.
As I said, I have loved to read ever since my dad taught me my letters. He has helped supplement my learning from books by teaching me new words, even to this day. Reading, writing, grammar, and phonics hold a very special place in my heart.
I spent two years as an Elementary Education major, and I have taken some classes and been in schools. My practical experience in those schools included teaching small lessons, reading to classes, and working as a tutor in an afterschool program. Most of my babysitting experience has been in this age range.
Besides letter recognition, the primary English subcategory I teach at the preschool level is phonics. As my students are not quite yet ready to read, I am helping them build skills and knowledge they will need when they begin to read. That is my main academic task right now in my classroom.
