Hi! I'm excited to help you achieve your academic goals! As a former professor at a large research university, I spent 20 years guiding undergraduate and graduate students in diverse fields like education, game design, media studies, and anthropology. My academic background includes an art degree from Reed College and a PhD in educational technology from the University of Washington. Outside of academics, I used to be the webmaster and game designer for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. This experience instilled in me a deep passion for fostering lifelong learning and a strong understanding of effective teaching strategies. I believe in a holistic approach to tutoring, where I not only help you grasp the subject matter but also develop the confidence and skills to succeed independently.

My areas of expertise include college preparation, graduate school advising, and anything related to design. I'm also comfortable providing guidance in life coaching, helping you navigate challenges and achieve personal growth. While my primary experience is with college-level students, I've also enjoyed guest teaching art, game design, and science to high schoolers. I'm confident that my adaptable teaching style and genuine care for my students will create a supportive and enriching learning environment for you. I look forward to working together!

Anthropology

Anthropology

I studied how teams learned to work together in online environments for my PhD in educational technology. I used ethnographic methods to follow a group of gamers for 10 months as they developed expertise and learned how to coordinate and build trust for effective teamwork. As a professor, I have taught online user research and field studies in naturalistic environments to learn about user behavior and find design solutions for their practice.
Computer Gaming

Computer Gaming

I was the webmaster and game design lead for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for four years before entering academia and then becoming a professor. As a professor, I taught interactive media design, web design, game design for education, and anthropology of gaming and internet culture for over 15 years.
Drawing

Drawing

I specialized in line drawing and perspective with landscapes and portraiture in college along with 3D animation. I have not taught art courses, but I have tutored simple perspective and sketching, and have taught formal courses on graphic design, web design, and game design.
Graphic Design

Graphic Design

I was the webmaster and game design lead for a science museum for four years before entering academia and then becoming a professor of interactive media design. Along the way, I've also independently designed websites, logos, brochures, posters, and whole branding guidelines on numerous projects.
Web Design

Web Design

I was the webmaster for a science museum for four years before transitioning to academia and teaching design in many areas including web design. I focus on helping learners understand the underlying principles of web technologies and providing a good solid foundation in hand-coding HTML before moving onto common libraries for CSS and Javascript such as Bootstrap and React. I also have 20 years of experience using blogging software such as Wordpress and ran several academic organizations' Wordpress sites. Furthermore, I tend towards teaching the ethics of web design, steering students away from using manipulative design patterns, and to embrace the original vision of the internet as an equalizing and democratizing force for good.

How to renew my site

I had to get with my host provider because we could not access my site. Mark told me that he thought the problem had to do with the renewal system with Host Gator. He was correct, there was a problem with my renewal system. We will reschedule another lesson next week.

Knowledgeable, Supportive, and Makes Learning Fun and Easy

I had a really great experience working with Mark! What sets him apart is his ability to have a super productive session every time because he figures out exactly what I need to accomplish and how he can assist me in the most efficient way. He also is patient and has a good sense of humor so it makes learning coding fun and takes away the stress. It is clear that he has been teaching coding in a classroom for a long time because he is very knowledgable and explains concepts very clearly. I also feel comfortable asking any questions I may have and his positivity keeps me motivated. I definitely look forward to continuing our sessions. I highly recommend!
